About
Dakar is a bustling capital city known for its strong music scene. Spend three weeks in Senegal during the month of June to uncover how hip hop has given a voice to the country's disenfranchised communities. Or choose to use your time to understand the relationship between the marine environment and emigration.
Students choose one course from the following:
Students choose one course from the following:
- Environment, Cultural Maritime Landscape and Emigration
- Music, Belonging and Community Activism in Senegal
Local professors lead students not only through lectures in the classroom but around Dakar on site visits to gain a deeper understanding of the topics discussed. Guest speakers also share their stories and their work in the community with the class. All courses are taught in English and are four credit hours each.
All students are paired with a carefully selected, English speaking host family and a variety of cultural activities and events are included such as an African dance workshop, visit to the historic Gorée island, and weekly Wolof lessons.

Academic Programs Abroad (APA) Scholarships
Become the voice abroad for APA with regular blog and social media postings. Semester awards begin at $500 and summer awards begin at $300. Eligible for bonuses at the end of term for outstanding work.

Guidelines/Requirements:
Previous scholarship recipients have had a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater, previous experience running social media accounts for a business or organization, shown a keen interest in engaging in French and Francophone culture, and have had a serious desire to take part in a full-immersion program.
Become your cohort’s photographic or videographic historian for your term abroad. Your photos and/or videos may be featured on the APA website or in future promotional materials!
