Adelante: Edinburgh - Equine Summer Program in Scotland

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about how equine sciences are done here. They do have some things a bit different compared to America.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The actual class work is fairly easy. I will say make sure you prepare for the final assessment, there is a lot of information to know.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Scotland is gorgeous. While I was here, I did get lucky with quite a lot of sun. Don't get your hopes up, but it may not always be rainy here, in Scotland.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The locals are super welcoming and very friendly.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

this program was the perfect experience. There was a lot of hands on learning during class which I enjoyed. And you get a tone of experiences inside and outside the classroom.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It really depends on how much you want to do. You can avoid spending a lot of money fairly easy, but if you want to go out and buy things, you will be spending quite a bit.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 50-200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Make sure to put aside money for personal expenses. Money for traveling, souvenirs, restaurants, etc..

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The hands on learning
  • The riding component
  • The events included in the equine program
* What could be improved?
  • More 'homework' to help us learn the material
  • A more structured final assessment
  • Class to be more broken up, shorter periods instead of 3 hours at a time
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew how easily it is to travel to nearby countries while in Scotland. I would have planned my mini weekend trips earlier. And what to pack. Bring a variety of clothes. Clothes for the classroom, for the yard, and for the city. I mainly prepared for being in the classroom and found myself running out of clothes for going into the city.
