My Experience in Bath, England!!! January 27, 2026

By (Psychology, Wellesley College) - abroad from 08/25/2025 to 12/13/2025 with

Advanced Studies England: Bath - ASE Study Centre

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I've learned how to live by myself, cook for myself, and travel by myself. While I had done all of these things at my home campus, it was totally different to do it in a foreign country. Everything was new, and it was stressful at first. Throughout the several months of being in England, there were so many times I became lost or I couldn't figure out how to do something and panicked, but it all led to my gaining valuable life skills. (I also am better at cooking now way better than before.) Now I am completely confident to say I can travel alone and manage myself in foreign areas.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes can be a little difficult with it being quite differently set up compared to other courses done in the US. I'm not sure for other people but for me, the fact that most of the classes were mainly dependent on 2 or 3 big assignments with a final exam for the whole semester and final grades were a little stressful, but there are plenty of resources that are offered to people who need them.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I think it was wonderful! All the staffs were very helpful and eager to help the students adjust to being abroad and enjoying the time they are here while succeeding in their academics. They are all welcoming and thanks to the program I have gained wonderful experiences I would have never had alone.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was very much satisfied with my housing! All the people were split into different housings and had kitchens where people can cook. Most of the rooms were nice and it gave a lot of freedom for people to do things individually or with their housemates. With only 3 people living with me in the house, we had movie nights and was able to get close to them easily and shared the experience of being abroad together. Also whenever there are problems with the house, the staff members were always there to help us.

* Food:

I bought groceries from the near by markets and stores and cooked for myself most of the time. Compared to being on campus, I very much enjoyed the freedom I had and was able to develop my cooking skills throughout it. Also the program introduced us to various places where we could easily find good food from the neighborhood.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There were many events that the program conducted and advertised for students to be more integrated with the local culture. There were field trips and collaborative events with the nearby college to meet with the locals and get to know them. Also the fact that there is not a campus and how we all lived in regular homes in the middle of the neighborhoods really helped me feel integrated and connected to the local culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't have any health issues during the program so I can't say much, but just from what I heard from my housemates, whenever they got sick they were able to get medicine easily from the nearby pharmacy, and the staff members of the program guided them throughly of where to go and what to say.

* Safety:

I would say it is extremely safe if you stay in the town and keep in check of your belongings! I walked around even at 2am in the night and it was okay. If you go out to London or other cities it might be a little more dangerous but Bath as itself was very safe. Just be aware of pickpockets but if you are aware of your surroundings, it would be alright.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Yes, I would choose the same program! If it wasn't for this program, I would have never experienced living in England. It was scary at first but the program helped me greatly in feeling welcomed and safe in the foreign area. The many field trips, especially to the historical sites and castles were AMAZING, and it brighten my views on many things. Specifically with some of my classes, I was able to go see several musicals which I never really was able to at home. It broadened perspective in plays and musicals. I also very much enjoyed the independence we had of our choice of food and free time, and I was able to experience solo traveling and cooking for myself because of it. It was a wonderful experience and I would definitely choose the same program again!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I think over than the flight ticket price, the living expense wasn't that expensive than I thought. The program gave us food allowances weekly so if you manage those allowances accordingly, you barely have to pay out of pocket for your food. It was mostly the souvenirs, living supplies (paper towel, notebooks, etc.), and tourism where all my money went.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Go to the markets and look out for the big sales! Each shop has different thing they sell cheap so take a day to just walk around and see which store has which! Also joining a membership while being there is a great way to save money. I frequently go to the movies so I got an ODEON membership which allowed me to watch movies at such a cheap price!

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Having a kitchen and house with much freedom to hang out with my housemates and cook my own food!
  • Many field trips which led me to many opportunities and experiences I wouldn't have had if I was alone!
  • Small class size and the interactive discussions made during class!
* What could be improved?
  • I'm not sure if this is possible but as the semester went by, less people started coming to the events. Possible way to encourage more students to come?
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? More flight/travel options and hotel options so I could have properly prepared much more ahead of time for trips I want to go to.
