Having Fun in Bath July 01, 2026

By (English Language and Literature, Wellesley College) - abroad from 01/26/2026 to 05/16/2026 with

Advanced Studies England: Bath - ASE Study Centre

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I definitely learned a lot, though I do think I prefer America to England. A lot of the history and politics I learned via being exposed in classes and in public were super interesting in a lot of ways.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I really enjoyed my classes this past semester. The tutors were engaged and happy to be there, and my classmates were often tuned in as well. Good material, good class discussions, etc. While very intense -- I was reading two books a week for two classes -- I had a lot of fun.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The academic building was really close to my house, which was nice. All of the team that were part of the ASE administrative staff were super helpful, kind, and always there for the students.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The house was very small and rickety, the doors slammed loudly, the dryer barely worked, the kitchen was unusable if there were more than two people in it, and I had a pretty bad experience with one of my roommates.

* Food:

We did not get food as part of our program, but we were given a more than sufficient amount of money to buy groceries every week.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I didn't spend a whole lot of time engaging with local British students or people my age, and while I don't know how much our program could have helped with that, it was a bit of a bummer.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The city was very nice and I never felt unsafe during my time there. Lots of tourists meant there was always people out, even at night.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I think I could have done more with the resources that ASE gave me. ASE as a program was excellent, and offered a lot that I didn't take them up on because I was overwhelmed with being abroad for the first time.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $50
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Prioritizing getting groceries and learning how to make meals yourself over going out is definitely a huge money saver.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Academically Excellent
  • Friends in the Program
  • Historical City
* What could be improved?
  • More contact with local British students
  • More variety with ALTs
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Britain is a very cloudy and dreary place. This is not the program's fault at all, but I ended up having some difficulties adjusting to the lack of sun and general rain and chill.
