A Summer in London with AIFS Opened My Eyes to My Future! Past Review

I loved studying with AIFS in London. Not only were the professors knowledgeable about their subjects, but they were more than happy to help us navigate the area. More often than not we took class trips, or had lectures outside as opposed to staying in the classroom. For the Shakespeare course I took, we walked the old theater district and went to see a play at The Globe. I didn't feel like the work load was too heavy, but thats because we covered so much in class and became comfortable with the material quickly. I loved that the professors understood that as college students, we weren't there just to take classes, but we were there to explore and grow as individuals. They encouraged us to get out and see London, rather than keep our noses in our books. I never would have gained the knowledge or experience I did if I didn't study with AIFS.

On-site administration of your program

I loved being with the AIFS staff in London. They were incredibly helpful with planning and executing trips inside and outside of England. They treated us like adults and respected us. They were a diverse group and each staff member acted as a friend, and made me feel at home.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We lived in a very safe area and I never felt that I was in danger. Most nightlife was within walking distance or a 5 minute tube ride away. Class was two blocks away from my dorm. All I needed to provide was my own toiletries, clothes, and towels. Sheets and a pillow were provided and taken to the cleaners weekly. The dorm wasn't the best quality; however, since the majority of my day was spent in the city, all I did was sleep there so it didn't bother me.

We were given debit cards that were loaded with sixty pounds every week to replace a cafeteria plan.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We had so many options for side trips. Every day had a different play, sporting event, day-trip, cruise, or even walking tours of the city available. We did have to pay for these things; however, they were at a lower cost than we would have paid if we went alone.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't have any health issues while I was abroad. I didn't feel like I was in danger at any time. My only advice to students studying abroad is to be smart. No matter where you go you should always watch your belongings at all times. You should have emergency numbers in your wallet or bag in case something happens. You should have a map of the subway or city in case you get lost. And you should use common sense when alone in a new place.
