AIFS: Rome - Richmond in Rome and Internship Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
ABSOLUTELY. Everyone should study abroad. Everyone should visit Rome. It has more history, culture, art, wonderful food & wine & friendly people than any other place I've been.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The courses would not be difficult for W&M students, but they are interesting & you will learn. It gives you plenty of time to experience Rome, which is the real educational experience.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Rosanna & the staff are awesome and very helpful.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Great apartment right by the Spanish steps, everyone had great housing.

* Food:

Umm hello it's Italy the food is amazing, just DO NOT eat at touristy places, they are gross. Take the main road, turn down a side street & then another & then pick a restaurant. Also they give you something kind of like food stamps that can be used at restaurants & grocery stores, if you use it right you wont spend any money on food. Awesome.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

They offered so much for us to do, soccer games, wine tastings, cooking classes...the list goes on and on. AIFS is definitely the best way to study in Rome. More for your money.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? use meal tickets wisely & you'll be fine! you can even buy things from wine to cleaning supplies w/ them! My money was mostly spent going out.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
Language acquisition improvement?

Great instructors as well as daily life in Rome allowed my Italian skills to Greatly improve
