AIFS: Stellenbosch - Study Abroad or Service Learning at Stellenbosch University

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Choosing to study abroad in South Africa was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I learned so much about the culture and the country and I absolutely fell in love with it. I can only hope that one day I will make it back there.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

There was a wide variety of classes offered at Stellenbosch and each of my professors were both knowledgeable and interesting. I was able to really learn about about South Africa up close an personal. The grading system was different than what I was used to in the US but the credits transferred over to my home university without a problem.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Choosing to study abroad through AIFS definitely made settling into life at Stellenbosch a lot easier than if I had tried to arrange things on my own. I think the best part about the AIFS program was the program administration in South Africa. They are quite literally some of the nicest, most genuine. and hardworking people I have ever met. They absolutely contributed to the amazing experience I had abroad.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in an apartment style dorm at Stellenbosch. The facilities themselves were nice and the area was also safe (thanks to a constant security guard patrol). The only drawbacks were the lack of wireless internet and the separation from the other South African students. I was housed in a block of apartments that were solely dedicated to international students. It was great to meet people from all over the world but I would have liked more interaction with South Africans.

* Food:

Primarily I bought groceries and cooked for myself, as did many of the international students. On days when we did not feel like cooking there were plenty of delicious and inexpensive restaurant options located in the downtown area. One restaurant that is an absolute must visit is a Lebanese place called Manoushe. I still have cravings for it 3 months later.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There are so many places to go both within Stellenbosch and all over South Africa. Travel is fairly inexpensive and it was very easy to to take the train into Capetown for the day. There are travel centers that can help you book trips and also many festivals you can attend. The vineyards in Stellenbosch are a definite must visit and there are plenty of options.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Health issues were not really a problem. There was a health center on campus if needed and AIFS staff made you you received the care you needed. There are a lot horror stories about the safety in South Africa but honestly I never had a problem. Being safe in South Africa is just the same a being safe in a big city. It's a matter of making smart choices like never walking alone at night and keeping tracking of your belongings.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
