LOVE the city but would choose a different program January 20, 2026

American University of Paris: Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My time abroad allowed me to explore my true academic interests and find a new side of human connection, education, and discussion that I did not know I could have. I was able to grow into a different person abroad, and it truly showed me to look at life from a different perspective.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I learned a lot from my experiences in Paris, whether it be from exploring the city, the culture, or even just finding new connections with other students from around the world. I learned many valuable skills for navigating an unknown environment and also learning how to immerse myself in a new culture. However, I wish I either taken different courses at AUP or chosen a different program within the city. Courses were interesting, but I felt rather disconnected from the city due to the admin and functions of the school. The courses themselves were not very rigorous and didn't require much time spent outside of class. Furthermore, many of the teachers, while friendly, did not engage much with the class, whether it be through discussion or being openly available outside of class (office hours).

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I didn't get much experience with the program administration, however, they did seem to be rather available to students if needed. The admin did seem more engaged with student life and not only focused on creating a community within the university, but they also worked to introduce students to the city initially.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was very lucky with my housing and got placed in an amazing part of the city. The rooms themselves were well taken care of and equipped with most items I may need during my time abroad. Furthermore, it was obvious the RA wanted to make an inclusive and welcoming environment through really interactive and engaging activities, and even just knocking on my door to say hi. However, if there was something needed from maintenance, I usually did not hear a reply back to my request (if I did it was a month later).

* Food:

Food was provided by the students, so the only options through the university were a cafe in the campus center. I didn't mind this, though, as it gave me opportunities to go out to smaller shops and spend time cooking for myself most nights, usually with friends.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

By the end of my stay, I felt rather integrated into the community and culture. I found myself feeling I 'fit in' more rather than feeling like a tourist. I could understand more of the everyday speech and communicate clearly in most situations. Furthermore, I found myself getting accustomed to daily customs and practices.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

The university does not have a very accessible health care center. There is one doctor who comes a few days of the week and is only by appointment. With this, it was nearly impossible to see this doctor. However, there were many other options (usually being the French health system -- either hospital or connected with a doctor). The pharmacies became my best friend in most situations and allowed me to go straight to a pharmacist with my issue and have them help with find what I needed.

* Safety:

I found that if you stayed in the central parts of Paris, the city was very safe. There are some areas on the outer edges of the city that are not as safe to visit, especially as a woman, however, in a group they were usually fine.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

I wish I chose a program that had more of a focus on immersion into the language and culture of Paris and France rather than just being a place for just english learning.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

1 -- In Paris, while it is possible, it was very difficult to spend a week without having any expenses. From transportation to food and activities, the cost did add up.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 300
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I'm not sure, it can be hard to have a smaller budget in this city, especially if you want to be cooking full meals and having activities. It is just important to keep track of what you are spending and go into each week knowing an estimated budget.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Focus on connecting students
  • Accessibility to the city
  • Pushing student independence
* What could be improved?
  • More rigorous education
  • French immersion
  • Resource availability to students
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew how to find more people within the city not from the program. I went in expecting a more international cohort within the school (not by much) and didn't think to look at events within the city meant to connect all international students.
