Experience DC from a journalists perspective Past Review
By A student (Communication, Trinity University) - abroad from 08/21/2013 to 12/10/2012 with
American University: Washington D.C - Washington Semester Program
I had an amazing job and got to really live as a journalist. It was all worth it. I made amazing friends and found the city I want to live in as an adult.

Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The speakers the program provides are amazing and the opportunities are immense. However, I did not learn much that I didn't already know. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived in the dorms and not WISH housing but I still thought it was great. Community bathrooms were a bit of a drag and no dorms will be as nice as Trinity's but they were more than sufficient. |
* Food: |
Comparable to Aramark. Not great but fine. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
By the end I felt like a native of DC and loved how well I had fit in with the city. I definitely want to move back. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I never had a problem but the health services people were very easy to reach if I had had an issue |
* Safety: |
Campus is very safe. The rest of DC depends on what area you are in but as long as you avoid taking the metro at 3 am alone you will be just fine. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
DC is an expensive place and the metro adds up. But you can live more inexpensively than I did, you will just miss out on a lot of cool restaurants/bars/events. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 100-125 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Avoid cabs. They drain money. The bus is a pain but cheaper. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | No |

|

|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | That my teachers wouldn't be that great. I still had a great experience but I didn't really learn anything new. |
