American University: Washington D.C - Washington Semester Program

YES!!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My professor was amazing-- I think I learned more from her this semester than in all of my time at Tulane.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

My expectations for the program were greatly exceeded. It was the best experience and the faculty/staff/everyone at American really helped to make it such a good experience.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We lived in very typical dorms, which isn't the most ideal living situation, but it was fine.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? It's expensive to live in Washington DC, especially when you have to use the metro all the time. Most internships are unpaid, so you end up paying a lot of money to get back and forth.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Do it! There is such a wide range of students who could succeed in this program because there are so many different tracks that you can choose. I found that the students who got to travel with their class seemed to have the best overall experiences, like I did with my class trip to Ecuador for three weeks. Living in DC was a great experience, and allowed me to make connections in a field I want to enter after graduation.

Comments

The person in the Tulane study abroad office focusing on this particular program left and the staff were not briefed on how to advise students.
