API (Academic Programs International): Florence - Lorenzo de’ Medici – The Italian International Institute (LDM)

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My study abroad experience was more than worthwhile. It was the highlight of my life and I wish more people could understand how absolutely amazing it was. I have learned so much and cannot wait to return to Europe to visit, live, or work. I would take any chance I got to return to Europe. In terms of my future plans I'm hoping that my life will lead me so that it was not a once in a lifetime experience, I hope traveling and Italy become a normal part of my life.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I felt I learned a lot and that most of my learning was reinforced by the rich history of the area

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I though API's staff was helpful and easily accessed by phone. I did think it took a little while to get certain things done and they did at time take a back seat to problems we had like bed bugs, a leak in our ceiling, and a key problems. They were very knowledgable and seemed to be helpful in helping us adapt or figure out the problems we had culturally. overall they went above and beyond what i expected as a student abroad.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was on Borgo La Noce which was right next to il mercato centrale and san lorenzo which was a great area, but the apartment itself had a little too much charm for my taste. it was poorly stocked with blankets and cooking tools, but served its purpose.

My apartment was a little dated and the furniture was dated and not as nice as some of the other apartments offered by the program. The area was very touristy and close to the attractions which was also really nice, groceries were close and provided a close walk to my classes it only took 5 to 10 minutes to get to class. It was not in face close to nightlife which was over closer to santa croce. Our TV in our apartment didnt work our intercom system to outside didn't work we had no screens in our windows and we did need to buy knives, becuz ours were so badly managed. The cooking supplies were not that good, but none of us had the money or desire to change it for such a short period of time.

* Food:

I lived basically on the fresh foods that i brought from the market and enjoyed that a suprising amount. I was suprised by a lack of variety that I am so used to having in America, because I can be a picky eater. I would recommend Dante's, Rosso Pomodori, Mama's Bakery for places to eat.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The students in API were some of the best people I have ever met in my whole life. They were open and accepting and exactly what I hoped I would find in overseas friends. My favorite trip was in Rome where some friends and I went to some bars in Campo Di Fiori and ended up hanging out with some really fun scottish rugby fans.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt perfectly safe, I never was scared or had any real problems in terms of health or safty.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? On food I spent about 35 euros a week and on personal expenses i probably spent about 75-100 euros, but that included gifts and was averaged from buying books and internet at the beginning of my trip.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? One of the expenses I didn't anticipate was the school supplies and books, school supplies were very expensive there especially as compared to here. I also missed a flight over spring break and that expense was luckily compenstated by me being frugal with my money prior to the trip.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I was able to practice speaking in class, but also in some stores and the open market areas were a great place to practice. I didn't need to use the language because 90-95% of the locals spoke english pretty well.
