API (Academic Programs International): Rome - John Cabot University

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Studying abroad made me more aware of different ways of thinking and living. It put everything in a new perspective. It made me more open-minded. It made me more self-efficient and more willing to explore and take risks. Studying abroad has instilled a desire to learn more about different places and different people and has inspired me to go abroad again in the future.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program and the two leaders were amazing. I always felt supported and safe. If I had any questions or problems they would help me immediately. They knew all about the Italian culture as well as the role Americans play in Italy. I also liked the size of the program when I went in 2009. It was big enough to meet new people and make new friends, and small enough to feel like you are not just a number/lost in the crowd, but known and a part of something. I liked the trips the program sent all of us on to different parts of the country. It was a great way to see other parts of the country and do different activities. It was also nice to have someone else's knowledge of that place while we visited it so we could appreciate it more.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved living in an apartment with fellow Americans. The apartment was fully furnished and was modern/new. The apartment was in an amazing location, right in front of transportation, walking distance to campus, surrounded by restaurants and stores.

* Food:

It is very hard to try to find a place that will cater to dietary restrictions. Portions were large. The food was delicious. It is most expensive near tourist destinations. The good food is found along the side streets and neighborhoods. Best food is also found in the smallest of places, not sit down restaurants.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Any of the weekend trips API took us on were memorable. They were filled with tours as well as free time. They brought to our attention important places we may want to explore. They usually has some sort of event planned for us, like a big group dinner, or a side trips (like the hot baths in Tuscany).

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Healthcare is tricky in any foreign country, but our API leaders used their knowledge and connections to take care of us. They took my roommate to an American dentist when a recent surgery she had before she left to Rome acted up. They also went with her to the hospital when she was sick. As for safety, Rome is a big city and is going to have its safety issues. You should always be aware that people will try to steal from you, and they are extremely good at it to the point where you don't realize it is happening. As Americans, you will be pinpointed and targeted. At night, never go out alone-always go in groups. Also know that taxi drivers will try to take advantage of you and take you the wrong way just to charge you more money.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced my Italian in my Beginner Italian class, in conversation and with learning grammar/vocab. I definitely needed Italian in my everyday interactions because everyday I'd go to at least one store/restaurant and need to speak to someone who worked there, many of who did not know much English, or none at all.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would 100% recommend a student to study abroad in Rome with API. They educated you and entertained you. Any student who is ready to embrace another culture and OK with say good-bye to American customs would benefit most from this program.
