Arcadia: Auckland - University of Auckland

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I will never forget this experience. I gained a sense of independence here--living on my own, meeting new people, navigating the city, planning my own trips. I have also learned not to judge people and to accept everyone as they are. I became best friends with certain individuals who back home I may not have really hung out with. With an open mind, you can meet and get to know so many different and amazing people. You have to put yourself out there to take full advantage of this experience. I've learned that you should do things you wouldn't normally do and to not be afraid to try new things. When you are placed into a completely foreign situation, you learn who you truly are.

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The main difference of the University of Auckland from Trinity is the larger class size. The lectures halls were huge and were pretty much all filled up. ~150+ people, I'd say. It was really confusing when I first got my schedule, because the same class meets in a different place and at a different time each class...seemed somewhat unorganized, but I guess it works? Also, their grading system is different. An A is an 80 and above. They say this is because they have higher standards, but it didn't seem to me that they graded any harder than any other school. As I said before, the classes were pretty easy. Even my upper level psych class was relatively easy. The lecture went pretty slowly. It seemed that what we covered in a week (3 days) during the lecture we would only spend 1 at Trinity. Also, all the classes put ANYTHING you need online. They don't print anything off for you, so I spent lots of money printing out notes/assignments/readings. Also, there wasn't much need for a textbook, either. You had course books that were just a big stack of bound papers with your rubric and weekly readings.

I WOULD RECOMMEND ARCADIA TO EVERYONE. Kate, our director in Auckland, was absolutely the best. She was like a second mother to all of us! She was so personable and acted like she has known you for years even if she just met you. She seemed to know everything about New Zealand; she always offered good advice; and always seemed to have an answer or know what to do if we ever needed anything. Jane was also great as well. They both knew all the great places to go visit, and gave us lots of great insider tips to help us get around. Very organized, as well. Our group had about 20 people, which I think was a great size. We all got along very well and we were like a little family by the end!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We lived in Whitaker Student Apartments....they were like little apartments (they call them "flats"), but they were in a building like a dorm. Each room had a living room area, dining area, full kitchen, 1 bathroom, and 4-5 individual rooms. It was great! It was a bit of an older building, but it was quite nice. All the dishes/silverware/pots/pans were all supplied. Water/electricity/heat in rooms/ linens were all supplied. Everyone in Whitaker would hang out. It was a very close knit group. The RA's were so great. I lived with 1 other American girl, 1 American guy, and 1 guy Kiwi (New Zealander). Great flat! All the people were amazing there. There were people from all over the world-- The U.S., New Zealand, Ireland, England, Australia, etc.

* Food:

Food was plentiful in the city. A bit less options in the grocery stores than in the US, though satisfactory. Had to cook your own food/buy your own.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Arcadia was so great about our trips! Lots of adventurous things. We went to Rotorua to go Zorbing (roll down a big hill in a ball filled with water). We went black water rafting in an underground cave and saw glow worms (freezing!) Went hiking in several areas, visited several beaches. We went to a Maori cultural village and learned about their culture, ate their food, and they performed for us. We also we took surfing lessons in Raglan.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I wasn't aware of any health issues. But when we had the earthquake in Christchurch during mid-semester break, Kate made sure to get ahold of all of us to make sure we were all accounted for. Any time we went on a trip, she wanted to know where we were going. No vaccines needed. There were student health services close by on campus. The Student Universe insurance, I believe, would cover any minor illnesses....

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I spent probably around $80-100 NZD (~60- 70 USD) per week on groceries. You really learn how to manage your money while you're on your own! Look for sale items :)
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? When you plan trips, look for group discounts. XBase was pretty helpful in booking various trips and can often get you a discount. Student discounts are available too in some places! Trips can become really expensive. Experience all that you want, but just remember all the exciting and adventurous stuff adds up!

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? New Zealand is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Everything is so green. The landscape will leave you breathless. It's incredible that a place this beautiful actually exists in reality--pictures don't do it justice whatsoever. You can't explain to anyone how amazing it is. There are so many adventurous things to do. If you don't like being outdoors and doing adventurous things, then NZ might not be for you. Some really fun/popular things to do: mountain climbing, hiking, rappelling down waterfalls, rafting, surfing, skydiving, bungy jumping... you get the idea. Though, there are of course other things to do that that--museums, learn about Maori culture, beaches, islands, etc. Auckland is really great because you are basically right in the big city, but there are so many surrounding areas to visit that are easily accessible. Also, there are many islands you can visit via the ferry. If it is US Fall semester and you don't like the cold--Go north island! Though there is a pretty strong Western influence, NZ is still unique in its own way. You won't regret studying abroad here! Also--don't go with someone you are good friends with. Going by yourself forces you to make new friends and build great lasting relationships.

Bible in Popular Culture

Course Department: THEO101
Instructor: Stephen Gardner
Instruction Language: English
Comments: I thought this class was very interesting. I never realized how much "Bible influence" there is in today's popular culture/society and how both influence each other. Great class.

Introduction to Pacific Studies

Course Department: PAC100
Instructor: Steven Latuva?.... (there were several lecturers)
Instruction Language: English
Comments: I was actually excited to take this class, because there is a lot of Pacific influence in New Zealand. However, the class was quite boring and hard to follow at times. It sometimes seemed pretty unorganized too. I did all the work, readings, went to tutorials, went to class, etc, but it seemed that you had to have some sort of "insider insight," such as being a Pacific Islander, to completely excel. The information itself was interesting, but was not presented in any particularly exciting way.

Cognitive Science

Course Department: PSYCH303
Instructor: There were 3 instructors.
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The course consisted of 3 different modules. 2/3 modules I found quite interesting and thought provoking. The labs were usually pretty relevant to the lectures and were pretty easy. Lecture went slow sometimes. Pretty easy considering it's an upper level course.

Musics of the World

Course Department: ANTHRO103
Instructor: Greg..
Instruction Language: English
Comments: I really enjoyed this class a lot. The professor was quite animated and very knowledgeable on the subject. You listen to various songs and then learn about the music and culture with the particular song as the theme. The TA was great, as well. 2 essays, one in class listening test, then the final exam. Great review for the final exam.
