Manchester: Through the Eyes of an American Past Review

By (Entrepreneurial Studies, University of Hartford) for

Arcadia: Manchester - University of Manchester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I have learned to be more open and to lighten up. I was thrown into another culture and had to remain open minded and also quickly acclimate. I would not trade this experience for anything in the world.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

See above comments.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The Arcadia office is based in London, so there was no on-site administration at my school as it was 3 hours from London but there were two visits by the Arcadia staff member heading our program during the semester and they were available for questions and to help in any problems through a quick phone call or email.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My flatmates were a mix of local and international students.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Food - 80 pounds a month (cooking and eating out)
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? The exchange rate can be a big disadvantage to Americans, it is something you should be aware of and prepared for. Also, depending upon which residential campus you reside, the cost of transportation can be quite high.

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? You will walk everywhere! Manchester is a big city and the easiest way to get around is by foot and the fastest by bike. Any person that is open to new experiences, enjoy traveling, and wants a true English experience will enjoy Manchester. Unlike London, Manchester is not a tourist area, most of the people you meet will be either locals or students. It is a great place to be away from the tourist haven and learn about the English culture as well as yourself.
