* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program administration during my time in Genoa was nothing short of exceptional. Our dedicated city manager, a true gem, went above and beyond to orchestrate a seamless and enriching experience. Her local expertise and strong connections with the hospital played a pivotal role in ensuring that our shadowing encounters were not only valuable but also tailored to our individual learning goals. She made certain that we felt completely at ease throughout our journey, and her attentive care added an extra layer of comfort that significantly enhanced our overall adventure.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the housing provided by Atlantis. The apartment exceeded my expectations, offering a spacious and comfortable living space that catered perfectly to both myself and my roommate. Its prime location, just a brief 5-minute stroll from the bustling city center, coupled with the convenience of a 15-minute bus ride to the hospital where we conducted our shadowing, added immense value to the overall experience.

* Food:

The culinary journey I embarked on in Genoa was an absolute delight. With the invaluable guidance of our local city manager, who seemed to possess an encyclopedic knowledge of the finest focaccia and gelato havens, I was treated to an array of gastronomic treasures. The thoughtfulness extended to the light breakfasts provided by Atlantis, tailored to our preferences, made for a great start to each day. Additionally, the bi-weekly group dinners orchestrated by Atlantis became true highlights of our experience. These gatherings not only brought us together but also showcased the very best of Genoa's culinary landscape. From indulging in pesto-infused lasagna to savoring the delights of frutta di mare, the possibilities seemed boundless. I can genuinely say that I was left utterly impressed and satisfied with every single meal, a testament to the diverse and delectable offerings of Genoa's food scene.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The social and cultural integration during my time in Genoa was an enriching and heartwarming experience. The locals' warm and welcoming nature created an inviting atmosphere that made me feel right at home. Within the hospital environment, the physicians and residents I had the privilege to interact with went out of their way to extend genuine hospitality. Their eagerness to connect, learn about us, and share their insights added a meaningful layer to our educational journey. During leisure hours, strolling through the city became a delightful way to uncover the true essence of Genoa. Engaging with the local community introduced me to incredible individuals, including the friendly owner of a charming coffee shop situated next to my apartment. Frequenting this café soon became a cherished routine, and by my second week, the owner knew my order by heart – a small yet heartwarming testament to the bonds formed and the sense of belonging that flourished during my time in this captivating city.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Addressing health issues throughout the program was a well-handled aspect of my time in Genoa. The accessibility of healthcare in Italy, coupled with the support from Atlantis, made me feel at ease. Although I didn't require medical attention during my stay, knowing that I was up to date on vaccinations prior to the program added an extra layer of preparedness. The local healthcare system's accessibility was notable, and having health insurance provided by Atlantis as part of the program gave me added confidence in case any unexpected situations arose. Comparing the local healthcare system to what I'm accustomed to at home, I found it to be efficient and accessible, with a focus on ensuring the well-being of both residents and visitors. While I didn't personally experience prevalent health issues in Genoa, the program's proactive approach to health preparedness, including any necessary vaccinations, showcased a commitment to participants' welfare.

* Safety:

Safety was a consistent and reassuring aspect of my program. With our vigilant city manager available for any queries or concerns, I felt well-supported throughout my time in Genoa. While the city itself exuded a sense of security, my peers and I found strength in sticking together. I highly recommend students to foster a spirit of togetherness, as I found my greatest comfort and security in the company of my fellow participants. Their presence and solidarity created an environment where I could truly thrive and explore without hesitation, contributing to an overall safe and enjoyable experience.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Absolutely, I would choose the same program again given the incredible experience; however, my adventurous spirit would also draw me towards exploring another captivating city with Atlantis, considering the wide array of exciting options available.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Living on a student's budget in Genoa was remarkably manageable. The program's cost was well-structured, and I was able to comfortably accommodate additional expenses. Factoring in around $300-$400 extra for travel to nearby cities, indulging in local cuisine, and bringing back souvenirs, I found that the overall experience aligned well with my budgetary expectations. Genoa's affordability was a contributing factor, making it easier to explore and enjoy without compromising financial comfort. This allowed me to savor the vibrant local culture, embark on train journeys to nearby destinations, and collect cherished mementos, all while maintaining a prudent spending approach. In summary, the program's thoughtful planning, coupled with the relatively economical nature of Genoa, made living on a student's budget a practical and enriching experience.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $100-$150/week
