Atlantis: Pre-med Fellowship Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I attended an Atlantis program in Valladolid, Spain in July of 2019! I absolutely loved the program because I got to travel, meet new people, watch surgeries and consultations, explore multiple cities of Spain and experience the culture, get shadowing hours (which is required by a lot of the grad schools I’m applying to), and so much more! Now, 4 years later I am still benefiting from the program because I get to talk about it in my PA school applications and interviews! I would recommend this program to any pre health student because it’s a great way to get a feel for medicine and different specialties, study abroad, and make great connections!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program was organized and guided, with enough free time for us to see and explore everything we wanted to! The housing was set up for us and hospital schedules were pre made, but we still had plenty of time and space to be independent!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing was great and felt safe! It felt like a dorm building/student housing and we happened to have our own rooms on our program, which was nice!

* Food:

There were always options for my restrictions at group meals!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved getting a feel for the Spanish culture through the restaurants, people, sight seeing, and more!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

There were no health issues on my program!

* Safety:

We walked around and explored every evening and I never felt unsafe! I big part of this was because we always went out into the community in groups and were aware of our surroundings. Also, checking in with your city manager is so important!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I love to travel and this is the perfect way to do that as a student, but still be productive with your time (which is vital for pre health students)!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150 USD

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
