Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Please note that the above ratings apply to the language aspect of the program. The other classes that we had to participate in ie. politics, sociology, literature etc were of a lower quality. But, the language instruction in this program is excellent.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administration truly helps you out with anything you need. I wanted to go camping on the great wall and they provided information and tents/sleeping bags. My sister visited me and they helped a lot and they are very understanding. They want to help you do whatever it is that you want to do and are very encouraging.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Building seven. The rooms were average, nothing wrong with them... The bathrooms were not of the best quality, kind of disgusting, but it's China. The kitchen was in the same room as the bathroom sinks. The library had internet and there were four study rooms as well as an upstairs computer room. (Classes are in the same building - very useful), so classrooms were also accesible for study. Three things to note: you (in theory) have a curfew, 11pm on weeekdays, 12pm on weekends. After that the building is locked and you have to wake up one of the fuwuyuans (helpers) to open it. You are not allowed to drink alcohol in the building. Lastly, you are not allowed any guests.

The restrictions don't really add up to much. It's a very cool neighbourhood and quite convenient. There are a lot of foreign students. It is incredibly safe, the surrounding shop/restaurant owners are incredibly friendly and are willing to help you with anything from practicing your language to homework to which bus to take. Class was in the same building as the dorm. Taxis are incredibly cheap in Beijing, nothings more that forty minutes away, if that. It's a pretty/interesting campus. Lots of on-campus restaurants, convenience stores etc.

* Food:

I eat everything so no issues. Just be smart about where you eat. If a place is packed with locals odds are the food is excellent and you are not going to get sick. Don't eat anything in extremes.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Field trips/travel/cultural attractions abound. Theres almost too much choice.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Beijing is a very safe city as long as you are smart. The hospital the program is connected with is of incredibly high standard and has excellent service. The insurance program is also excellent.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? A meal is tops 10kuai(1-2US$) each for local food of western can range from 20-80kuai (5-10US$). Things might seem expensive but they are relatively not. A towel, 30 kuai, Canned/Bottled Drinks: 3kuai. Bottle of water: 1-2kuai. ICecream ie. haagen-dazs 100 kuai. Mixed Drink: 15-80 kuai. Baijiu (local rice wine): 5 kuai. FOrtnightly top up of phone card: 50kuai. Taxi to other side of city 40kuai. It depends where you go and what you intend on buying. Go local, its cheap.

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I think they improved tremendously. However it is important for future students to know that it only improves as much as you want it to improve. You can get away with not speaking the host language. But it you actually want to learn there are a thousand opportunities everyday to do so...

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Abroad is what you make of it. If you want to have a purely American time in Beijing, you can do that. However, if you want to have a completely immersed experience, you can also have that.

Comments: The professor was trying to become a member of the communist party so he didn't have the most objective view. It was a passable course but wouldn't compare to any course at a well respected US University.
