Italy is a joke but fun for a semester. Past Review

By (Accounting, The University of Texas at Austin) - abroad from 08/25/2010 to 11/26/2010 with

Bocconi University: Milan - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely! I'm amazed at how much I've learned about the world. It's cliche but you will learn so much about yourself and others. I know I want to come back for a longer stay to work in Europe for a year or 2.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

For being one of Europe's premier business universities, Bocconi lacked. Poor instructors.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Don't expect help from Bocconi! I walked in my first day to the welcome desk to ask where the International Student Offices were and the dude rolled his eyes, gave me the most vague instructions and wasn't helpful at all. The International Student office wasn't helpful either. I asked where to get an Italian phone at and the lady replied "the center of the city" as if in my 18 hours in Milan I knew what she was talking about. I asked her to be more specific and she wouldn't. It turns out that all 3 major Italian cell phone providers have stores on the same block as Bocconi. Bocconi is a joke. Italy is fun.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

It was hard finding housing for only 4 months. I went through a series of apartment deals that fell through because the landlords would make a verbal agreement and when it came time to sign the lease they would back out and want more money, be it upfront, per month etc. I had to really negotiate to get the place I'm in. I take it as part of the experience and my education.

* Food:

Italian is great but there's not that much in the way of alternative cuisines.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There are events several times a week about going out. Sign up for the Facebook group and you'll have plenty of stuff to go to every week. There also weekend trips planned to France or through Italy throughout the semester.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Didn't have any health or safety issues. I did feel that Italy wasn't as safe as Austin. I'd hear about muggings etc. Subways can be shady.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Not really. My housing cost about the same as West Campus at UT but I got a WHOLE LOT LESS! Food is more expensive. It's an expensive semester, even if you don't travel.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

* Who did you live with?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I did not realize how big of a joke Italy was to the EU. They make fun of their terrible political system, corruption and president. Italy has a good marketing department because movies definitely paint a different picture.

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
