Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Lectures were easy but the professors grade very hard. It is all essay exams. I didnt have to write a single paper the whole term with I found very odd. Overall about the same work load and expectations as an American University.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The people in the office were great and very friendly! I had a lot of visa problems and they were a huge help and went out of their way to fix my problems.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The Superdorm, or as I liked to call it the Stupidorm, was pretty terrible. no guests after 1am, complaints if you had friends over and were being "loud", no drinking, a crazy lady that runs the place, no kitchen and all extremely over priced. The turkish students pay far less. Perks, there are maids that come to clean everyday and you do have your own room.

* Food:

food is amazing here and cheap!! vegetarians had no problems. There are lots of cheap places around campus and the dinning halls are great too.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Istanbul is an amazing and huge city with everything to offer! The ESN offers some trips out of the city and lots of parties.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Be smart, thats all there is to it. Istanbul has a very low rate of violent crime but that doestn mean its safe for a girl on their own at night.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

Most people in turkey do not speak English. It is very important to learn basic Turkish. However the beginner class was a joke, the professor canceled regularly and even though I probably should have failed the final she gave everyone an A.
