London: A Life Changing Experience Past Review

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was perfect for an American student studying abroad. The work was challenging but professors did not overload students with work. Professors were understanding to the idea that we were excited to be studying in another country and therefore took students on field trips so we could see even more of the city. The grading system was fair and the local English professors made it a point to tie in information about London society and London culture into their lectures.

On-site administration of your program

The professors I had were very helpful and informational. Students could go to them to ask anything from class topics to where the best place to eat was in London. Professors and faculty were extremely knowledgeable and helpful when it came to London culture and the country. My expectations were met and exceeded in all aspects except for the internship I had.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved living in South Kensington, where my housing was located. It was extremely safe and was in a great location; right next to Kensington Garden and Hyde Park. Classrooms were either in my building or a 15 minute walk. The grocery store was also a 15 minute walk away. The closest tube stop was a 10 minute walk, and the closest bus stop was less than 5 minutes away. Therefore, going out at night was easy. There were plenty of restaurants to eat at in the area. I had to buy an extra pillow but that was it as far as bed-ware and cook-ware goes.

The program gave a London Guide book when we first arrived that had restaurant and pub suggestions in it.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved going to the London river festival and seeing the London countryside because of all the field trips I went on. Visiting Leeds Castle and Canterbury was by far my favorite trip. The program could have done better in organizing events between our American university and the British university across the street (Imperial College).

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

The neighborhood I lived in was extremely safe and their was pin codes to get into every school-associated building. There was a security guard at the door of the dorm I lived in. As far as healthcare goes, the doctor was very expensive to go and see, so I don't know many students who actually utilized it. However, if needed, going to the hospital was easy and free. The National Healthcare System in London is struggling a little right now however; they are in a lot of debt and are in the process of making major cuts to the system. I did not need to get any vaccines to go to London.
