"All that mighty heart" Past Review

Brigham Young University: London - London Study Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned that there is beauty everywhere and in everything. I learned that the past is all around us. I learned that different doesn't mean worse. I learned that change is good, as long as we remember how far we've come. I learned that how we remember something reflects our mindset more than it reflects actual history. I learned that people can always find something that connects them. I learned that the world is so much bigger and so much better than I've ever imagined.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

We took a British history course and and English literature course. As an English major, I felt that the English course didn't go as in depth as I would have liked it to, but since most of the people on the program weren't English majors, that is understandable. The history course was oustanding. Sometimes the reading was a little much, but anyone who was decent at skimming did fine. The professors did a great job of incorporating site visits and cultural experiences into the curriculum.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

The food was always delicious. I would have enjoyed a few more British dishes, just to get the experience, but from what I hear about British cooking, our limited experience might have been a good thing.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Living in a center means that most of your time is spent with other students on the study abroad. Our main opportunity for cultural integration was church, which was wonderful.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

London is very safe for a city that large. Just don't go anywhere alone at night and you'll be fine.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

If you want to spend very little money while you're in London, that's definitely possible as you only have to buy a few meals and you can just go grocery shopping for those. But who goes on a study abroad to save money? I spent a lot of money every week because I went to several shows ever week which usually cost 15 to 25 pounds each with a student ID.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Maybe $30 to $40 on food.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I'd say shop at a grocery store instead of going out to eat. I preferred to spend my money on shows, but if food is your thing, than go out to eat. Mostly, just plan on spending a fair amount. That way, when you do, you won't be stressed about it.
