Brigham Young University: Paris - Paris Study Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was 100% worthwhile. I am pretty much broke at the moment, but I am a happier American, and a curious/engaged student. I want to travel more, and it was just an eye-opening experience, even though France is not THAT foreign-ey

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I think it was appropriately difficult for being a study abroad. If you make it to course intensive, there is not time to enjoy the culture you are being surrounded by.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt pretty "French" by the end, but I think there could have been a bit more interaction with others are age or something.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

They teach us about safety, but really what I felt it came down to was if we were being cautious and smart about what we were doing we were safe (just like we would be in America or any where else in the world).

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 50-100 dollars
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? You can live up the study abroad experience without having to spend all your life savings. Even in Europe there are ways to save.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? French 321
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Spend most of the day while you're out and about speaking in the language, then at night when you are tired and don't want to think resort to English.
