By Paden Stanton (University of Maine - Orono) - abroad from 09/05/2016 to 12/23/2016 with
Carleton University: Ottawa - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
This experience is overwhelmingly self-developing. My time in Canada was full of self-reflection and adventures in their great natural environment.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Very high class institution for international affairs, which is what I study, so it offered many clubs, research opportunities, world renowned professors, and fun. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The study abroad office there is what I used as a home base and everyone there treated me with kindness and consideration. I had an advisor for my specific program, and she had all the answers to whatever question I had. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived in an airbnb, so those can obviously vary. Mine was fine, nothing out of the ordinary, and a 15 minute bus ride from campus. Good deal. |
* Food: |
The food is pretty good, lots of fried things and sugary desserts. But great coffee too. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Just like America in many ways, which was okay, because I was one of two from America who was going to Carleton for the term. Made great friends pretty quickly through clubs and classes. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
Free healthcare for the time you're there after your single payer fee! It's ideal. |
* Safety: |
Absolutely safe and friendly environment. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
2 Go to large grocery stores, and you'll be okay. Public transport is cheapest. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | About $110/week |
