By (Public Health, University of Arizona) for

CEA CAPA Education Abroad: Buenos Aires, Argentina

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I think being abroad made me see things I never would have at home, it made me more independent and adventurous and willing to try things that I wouldn't normally be comfortable with.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload is very reasonable, grading is similar to how it is in the States, but the teaching is more through examples and real situations in the country rather than through text which is nice.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They are very helpful and willing to give advice on anything and everything.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The dorm was very old and not in the best condition. I found bugs a few times and many people complained of having bed bugs. But they cleaned our rooms daily throughout the week and changed our sheets once a week which was very nice. You have to buy your own toilet paper and soap and such, but thats to be expected.

* Food:

At the dorm the food is alright, they always have a vegetarian option which is nice for me since I do not eat meat, yet the food does get a bit repetitive and could be better.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I went on a few trips to Iguazu, Mendoza, Cordoba, Uruguay, and Mar del Plata and loved every one of them. The events arranged by the program were fun, but i will say the meals they treated us to were never very good.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Buenos Aires is a big city so there is obviously some crime. Theft is very common here, but as long as you are smart and aware of your belongings you should be fine. I never felt unsafe about anything other than having my belongings stolen though.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I could speak Spanish to any of my teachers or any of the staff members, but they all also speak English which is nice when I had questions I didn't know how to ask in Spanish.

Its just finding the right time to sleep which is the hard part.
