What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile. It completely opened my eyes to a new culture and especially how others view the U.S. I am now sure that I want to live/work/get masters abroad. I can't wait to go back!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Workload is manageable. Must less than the work at your normal University. The classroom environment is much more open where students free comfortable to discuss topics openly. It is much less informal in the sense that students will challenge professors by asking questions and professors openly accept questions that may cause controversial attitudes among classmates.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The actual program office was located about a half hour bus ride away from the University. The program directors were only available at the University during the lunch period. It was very easy to get a hold of the program directors and they were very helpful to all students.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Neighborhood was very safe! Unfortunately I was the furthest away from the University and central part of the city than anyone else in the program. However, my house was beautiful and even had a pool in the backyard! Getting to school took anywhere from 30-45 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. My host family treated me so well! A felt very much like a part of the family on most occasions.

* Food:

Food was excellent! A lot of carbs!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I absolutely loved Iguazu Falls and getting to take a small look at the life of the Guarani people in a nearby village.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

In a city with 13,000,000 people- there will be many times when you won't feel safe. It is important to be with someone at night or even if you are in an unfamiliar neighborhood where there are not many people around. While abroad I contracted a parasite. My host family brought me to a Clinic where I ended up staying for four hours. The doctors claimed to know English but communication was not effective. I had numerous and unnecessary lab procedures done which I late found out was because everyone knew I wan an American and assumed I had a lot of money. They gave me no prescriptions nor did they tell me what was wrong. Once my symptoms returned after having subsided for about a week. I went to the Hospital which works directly with the program and waiting in the waiting room for 4 hours until a doctor could see me. He spoke fluent English and was very helpful in recommending treatment and prescribed me two different medications to help with the pain and get rid of the parasite. There were several vaccines needed before traveling. There did not appear to be any prevalent health issues in the country.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Helpful and fun program directors
* What could be improved?
  • Assistance through health issues
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Don't study abroad with this program if you are just looking for a fun vacation. The people in the program and the directors are too special to be taken advantage like that. If you are looking to become more independent, make lifelong friends, and learn things about yourself you never thought- go for it!
