I wish I could go back and spend more time in Argentina! Past Review

By (International Area Studies, University of Oklahoma) - abroad from 07/19/2013 to 11/09/2013 with

CEA CAPA Education Abroad: Buenos Aires, Argentina

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about how other people live. I think experiencing another culture helped me to understand my own better. I would definitely say it was worth it!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had a wonderful host family! I would recommend anyone to live with them! Wonderful people and the apartment was very close to the local university.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I wish there had been more interaction with locals my own age. I don't feel like I received a good opportunity to learn the slang and things like that of the region.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Not applicable to me!

* Safety:

Advice for other students: Be smart! I never felt unsafe but I also didn't go out walking alone at night or anything like that. Don't do anything you wouldn't do in the States. Be aware of your surroundings.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It was hard! I spent way too much eating out the first month, its easier and also a social event.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $75 or more
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Go to the grocery store. Also avoid the American fast food places, its not the same and its a lot more expensive. Learn the public transportation systems.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

All my classes were taught in Spanish.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Conversational Spanish
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Try to speak the language with other American students. Its a bad habit to break if you start speaking to one another in English.

  • OU Hybrid Program
* What could be improved?
  • Organizational Skills
  • Too much emphasis on eating on excursions
  • Friendliness and helpfulness of on site staff (very lacking)
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? There was an intensive spanish language class offered a month before my group came, I would have participated had I known. It is better to bring cash, you can get a better exchange rate.
