The European Life Changer Past Review

By (Applied Economics., Providence College) for

CEA CAPA Education Abroad: Florence, Italy

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a different understanding of the United States and different countries of the world. It impacted my cultural awareness because now I know there is a different way to live life, that our way of living life may not be the best way and through cultural interactions we can learn a different way to live from the traditional American way.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was significantly less than Providence College. The grading system was the same. The educational system was modeled after the United States standards. Everything was pretty much the same. It was taught in the same manner as Providence College with lectures and then student participation afterwards. Quizzes, Exams, and Papers were also given on academic performance as well.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program had a number of strengths. They included the fact that it was taught in English and in the traditional American learning style. Also it was a nice school and the Administration was very nice and professional. They included a number of field trips to a number of cities in Italy. The weaknesses were that the internet was hard to access (sometimes it did not work), the school closed at 6:30 at night, so it was hard to find a study place, and it did not have a library within the school. These things made it hard for academics within the school.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The apartment was located within a safe neighborhood. It seemed as if everybody was very friendly around where we had lived. The apartment was about a 30 minute walk to school and to the nightlife. I did not need to buy items to settle in (besides the food). Overall the apartment was very clean, well taken care of, and it was a very nice and relaxing place to live.

* Food:

The food was not as big as we are used to in the United States. There were smaller portions and was not as high in "fat" content. I would suggest eating in (that way you can get as much food as you want) or you could eat out (but may have to spend a lot to buy the same quantity of food as in the US).

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We made a soccer team and we played against other study abroad programs within Italy. That was a very cool organized program that I had enjoyed.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The city was very safe. Police were always seen and I did not hear of any serious crime while I was there. I did not have an experience with the healthcare system there. I did not need any vaccines either. There were a lot of pick-pocketer's there. I would suggest keeping money in a secure location. Other than that, there were really no issues with crime.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? There was really no surprises. Everything was broken down and you knew what you had to pay for before being presented the bill.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I could practice my language around the city, with friends, or with Professors. I did not need to use the host country language in everyday interactions the majority of the people did speak English there.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Being willing to do anything. Be adventurous and see what is out there! A person who is adventurous and wants to explore the world would be a perfect candidate for this program. Anybody who has no interest in different cultures or is intolerant to different views and ways of life would not like studying abroad.
