Studying Abroad opened my eyes and gave me an experience nothing else could. Past Review

By (Rollins College) - abroad from 01/11/2011 to 04/21/2012 with

CEA CAPA Education Abroad: London, England

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to face challenges without leaning on my immediate friends and family. I also learned to step out of my comfort zones and do things that scare me. The experience was 100% worth while.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Although one of my classes was enjoyable to attend, none of them required a lot of work.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Select students were in very poor housing very far away from everything while other students were in very nice housing in the middle of the city.

* Food:

CAPA did not provide us with any food but the host country food was enjoyable.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Because of my internship I felt very integrated with the local culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

We had mold in our apartment for several months and it was never removed. We also had safety issues with people living around our apartment that capa never reported.

* Safety:

We had several instances of peeping toms that CAPA waited about a month to act on.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Because of travel it was hard to live on a student budget and I had to use some of my saving to travel. I do feel as if travel was worth it because weekend trips to Paris are impossible when living in the United States.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 50$
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't be afraid to spend a little more money if that means getting to travel more. That being said, look for good deals and book flights or trains early in order to save money.

  • Learning through my internship
* What could be improved?
  • communication between CAPA workers and students
  • Housing
  • The way the CAPA staff conducts themselves. They do not respond to emails in a timely manner and are not respectful to others.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? If I knew that CAPA was as unprofessional as it is, I would of chosen another program.
