Best 4 months of my life, hands down! Past Review
By Susannah B (Journalism., Northeastern University) - abroad from 01/08/2013 to 04/20/2013 with
CEA CAPA Education Abroad: London, England
I learned how to live in a huge city but still make it feel like home. I learned a lot about myself and my capabilities to adapt to new situations and environments.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 0-2 weeks |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Challenging, interesting classes that related to my interests. All transferred back successfully to my home university. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Very helpful advisors who answered my questions quickly and were always on-site for in person meetings. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I had a single room in a suite-style apartment in a safe, fun neighborhood. My room was somewhat small but the apartment well-equipped with a full kitchen and washer/dryer. |
* Food: |
As part of my tuition, I received a weekly stipend of 40 pounds that I used to pay for my groceries and/or meals out. This really helped me manage my money effectively. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Very! I made friends with a lot of locals and the MyEducation events helped me see parts of the culture and city I probably wouldn't on my own. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I had to postpone my semester abroad because of a health problem, but before I knew if I would go regardless CAPA let me know of every possible accommodation they would make for me if I chose to go. |
* Safety: |
Parts of London, like any city, are safer than others. I was placed in Ealing, which is very residential. I never felt at risk there. You learn quickly how to adapt to the city's environment and which areas to avoid. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
It depends on what you want to do. London's museums/events are mostly free, but a lot of clubs and bars have cover charges and expensive drinks, especially if you are in Central London. However, groceries were surprisingly cheap. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 50 pounds |
