CEA CAPA Education Abroad: London, England

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a sense of independence; I had to learn to do everything for myself. This was definitely a worthwhile experience and I think everyone, if they get the chance, should study abroad.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My educational experience was definitely reached in this program. The only thing bad was classes were only once a week for each class and the days would be so crammed with info and trips that we miss out on learning opportunities.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everyone at CAPA in London was very knowledgeable and tried everything they could to help along the way.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The best thing about where I lived was the location. We were right across from Waterloo Station and anywhere we wanted to go was a tube ride away. The London Eye was a five minute walk from the dorm and so many other things in the area. The bad thing was there was no common room, only a small chair and bench and with eight girls in one dorm that wasn't going to work. Both of the elevators broke during the third week of the program and we had to climb the stairs to the fourth floor. The rooms were average but had very thin walls. We stayed in the Notre Dame- Conway Hall dorms.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Unless you went out to a pub, it was very hard to find British people and not tourists.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

London is a safe city if you know how to navigate it. Pedestrians do not have the right of way and you need to be careful crossing the road since they drive on the opposite side.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Getting to go to London was one of my biggest dreams and if I could go back and choose the same program I would.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

If you budget yourself you will not spend that much money.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $80
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't eat out every night or if you do make it a cheap meal. Souvenirs are great but don't buy them at the first place you see them because I guarantee you that you'll find it somewhere cheaper.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
