The best four months of my life in London! Past Review

CEA CAPA Education Abroad: London, England
I learned more than I would have ever imagined in my time studying abroad. Being away from home at college teaches you a lot about growing up and being self-sufficient, but being away from home in another country is an entirely different experience. It is such a special and eye-opening experience to live in another country. London is an extremely diverse place so I was exposed to countless different cultures and types of people. It was so exciting and refreshing to be constantly running into different experiences each and every day.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I loved going to class! I learned more than I would've ever imagined. The Professors are great and very knowledgeable. They want you to learn as much as you can, but they make it fun and enjoyable. Class included a lot of field learning where we got to learn about a topic in London and then visit it the following week. It was a very immersive class that taught me a lot. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The CAPA staff was AMAZING! Anything you needed, there were there to help. If you have any concerns at all they are there to help. They have all the resources there for you if you need help with your living, internship, health, etc. The CAPA staff is very welcoming and friendly. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The living arrangement was great! We had a two-level flat. Our bedrooms and bathroom was on the first level, and our kitchen and living area was on the second floor. We had a laundry machine which was great! The location of our housing was amazing as we were very centrally located. Also, our neighborhood was extremely safe and I never felt unsafe. |
* Food: |
The options for food in London is endless. They have every genre of food that you can imagine. The price points of restaurants vary a lot so you don't have to worry that everything is expensive. There's a lot of markets that sell amazing food at low prices as well as quick restaurants around the city that are affordable. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Because we were living and working in the city, and not living in dorms on a campus, I felt very integrated with the local culture. Commuting to work and class on the tube made me feel like a local as I was constantly surrounded by local Londoners which made me feel just like one of them. Also, in class we learn a lot about British culture which helps you understand social norms and why certain things are the way they are in England. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I was sick the first month we were in London and CAPA helped me immensely in finding a clinic to go to. It was very easy to get care, I just went to a walk-in clinic that CAPA recommended to me. The doctors at the clinic were great, it was a very easy process, and it didn't cost me any money. It felt like a similar visit to the doctor at home. |
* Safety: |
I felt extremely safe in London. I was worried about safety before I got to London but after the first few days I realized how safe I felt. Our housing was located in a very safe neighborhood and I never felt in danger. Also, during my time in London I never had anything stolen from me. If you use common sense and are aware of your surroundings you will be totally fine with safety in London. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
I absolutely loved this program and have nothing bad to say about it. It was everything I hoped for and more. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
London is an expensive city, but you can make it as affordable as you need to be. I chose to pack my lunch for my internship and cook at my flat during the week to safe money so that I could travel more. It's all about how you balance it. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $100 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Buy groceries! Pack your lunch for class/your internship and cook at home as much as you can! Of course, go out to eat and enjoy the local food, but not every night. |
