Lovely London Experience Past Review

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The experience was definitely worthwhile. I would love to go back! My only regret was not being able to travel as much as I had hoped to. The opportunity of being abroad really allows one to grow in independence and self reliance.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was not unreasonable, grading was fair and teaching methods were great in their use of out-of-the classroom technique. The grades were based on one or two essays and a final exam. The main difference I noticed between the UK's system and the US's is that theirs put more responsibility on the student to learn the material on their own and then use class time to discuss and clarify.

On-site administration of your program

The experience of being abroad was amazing. The exposure to new cultures and sights was exciting and wonderful. Many of the program's aspects were also great, the university we took courses at was definitely wonderful in terms of allowing us access to as much as it could (ie. for the Shakespeare class I was in we got free tickets to at least 4 shows). Unfortunately as with all good things there were some down falls. There was very little interaction with actual British students because our classes were composed of other American exchange students. In addition, there were few opportunities to travel very far from London between our three courses and internships we only had two 3-day weekends. Nonetheless, overall the experience was unforgettable.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

I'm a pescetarian, so naturally I was a little concerned with how easily their food options would agree with my diet. I was very pleased to find that it is very easy to meet almost any dietary need there. Be it when dining out, or eating in with products from the grocery stores.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I would have liked more opportunities to interact with the locals, but other than that the events organized by the program were great. We got to visit some of the main tourist attractions as well as to see a show. One of my favorite experience was the trip to Cambridge.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt very safe in the city, although we did hear of some questionable happenings I personally did not feel unsafe. Nonetheless, London is a city and as in all big cities, there was crime.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? London and Europe in general is VERY expensive. If you are unable to budget I suggest you learn.
