CEA CAPA Education Abroad: Rome, Italy
I was the most skeptical about studying abroad. I didn't want to go. I always thought I knew.... Oh man was I wrong. This has been a life changing experience. I've met people I never thought I'd meet. I've seen things I thought I'd never see. I've had new experiences. I've had the best moments of my life. Its interesting because when I think back about it, everyone in the program at some point or another decided "I'm going to Rome with CEA" and in that moment all our lives became intertwined. I've met people who might be lifetime friends. I've met people who I may never see or speak to again. Yet everything adds to the experience and makes it that much better. I feel as though we've always lived in our own little world in the States and until you've traveled, you won't understand how big the world is. Getting the opportunity to learn about new cultures and see all the history around the world has given me a better appreciation for life. The words great and amazing wont even begin to describe my experience abroad. This experience abroad has also given me sometime to think about my passions. I'm not sure where I am at right now, but its got me thinking. A LOT. I wouldn't trade these last 3 months for very many things. I've realized that I am experiencing what many people work a lifetime to experience. The sad part is, sometimes, they still don't get there. I feel so lucky to have this opportunity. Best decision of my life thus far. The best way I could put it is: I thought i KNEW. I was right, I did KNOW. But when you EXPERIENCE it... it feels completely different.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Overall, I really enjoyed the program. I thought the workload was perfect: not too overwhelming yet not too little. There is a very fine line, and I think the program nailed it. Teaching methods I thought was a lot better than universities in the states. We were very hands on with everything we learned. We visited historic sites (for history/religion classes) and we were immersed into the italian society (for italian language class). Actually seeing history and shopping in the markets and cafes' made the experience so much more valuable. The learning experience is completely different when it's applied. I've always believed learning concepts were important, however, I believe learning how to apply them is even more important. The American education system undoubtedly offers more knowledge/information. However, it fails to help apply these concepts. There's a big difference between knowing and doing. Knowledge is useless without action. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The administration overall took a great experience and made it even better! The exceeded my expectations on all aspects. Every single staff member were so helpful! whether it was under their job description or not, they all found a way to help a student whenever we needed it. Whether it was directions to get to places, recommendations, helping communicate in italian... it didn't matter, you name it, they gave their full effort to help. Anytime there were problems, they addressed it to the best of their ability. They were always helpful but happy to help at the same time. It felt as though we were friends. I think that really made the experience that much better. I can't find anymore words to emphasize how great the staff was. Always so helpful and friendly. Great people! |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I thought our apartment was in a great location. Though many of my roommates hated it, I really thought the location of our apartment added to the experience. We were more isolated from the touristic areas. Yes, bus rides were longer no matter where we wanted to go. But the fact that we lived near all Italians, it pushed us harder to implement ourselves into their society and community. I had to try and speak italian, where as i feel many of my friends (who attend John Cabot University in Trestevere) did not get the full experience. They were able to get around speaking english most of the time. They did not full know how to use the bus system. i felt our neighborhood was safe. I enjoyed my walks to class in the morning. The housing arrangement really helped me appreciate home more. I think that is very important. Learning how to appreciate what we have by comparing it to what we're experiencing now. What I did not like however, was how far apart our apartments were from students in the same program. It was difficult meeting up because everyone was scattered. I thought if the apartments were together, it would add to the experience. But overall, I thought the housing experience was nice. |
* Food: |
Awesome food in Rome! Loved the pasta. Loved the pizza. The one pizza place that stood out to me was "Buffeto" near Piazza Nuovona. Otherwise, everything was great. Like most places, you'll have your hit and misses with restaurants, but we'll live to eat another meal. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
CEA's Capri/Sorrento arranged trip was awesome! I thought it was great that CEA had the trip in the beginning because it really brought all the students together. Yes, we had classes together and had a short time to meet each other. But when CEA had the trip scheduled and brought everyone together and had a weekend out, I thought thats where most of the friendships formed. Here, we got a chance to meet everyone outside the "student" perspective. I thought it was an awesome trip. The social experience overall was awesome. But again I reiterate it could have been better if the apartments were closer together. The program is relatively small, which gives everyone a chance to meet everybody. But overall, the social and cultural experience was AMAZING! |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I had no health or safety issues. Neither did anyone I know. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |
|
Language acquisition improvement? |
I usually tried my best with the Italian I knew. Most people did not speak english, however, I was able to get around. I did not practice it daily per se, however, I did use it everyday. Whether it was grocery shopping, ordering meals, or asking for directions. I think immersion is the best way to learn a language. |

A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | Do it. Learn a new culture. Meet new people. Make lifetime friends. Create magical moments. Enjoy new experiences. Travel. Get lost, it'll help you find yourself... All students will benefit from this program. I think thats what makes it special. The diversity. Everyone here learns a little bit from one another. If you add it together.... we've all learned a lot. |

Jewish Experience in Rome |
Course Department: | REL341 |
Instructor: | Gabriele Simoncini |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | The course was great. The material covered by the professor was excellent. The course was challenging in that there was a heavy reading load weekly. In addition, some of the material seemed to be irrelevant to our examinations. Overall, however, the course was amazing. We had great guest speakers (two rabbis). We visited important historic sites which related to the Jewish experience in Rome (the Jewish Museum, Jewish Ghetto, Jewish Synagogue). The professor was very knowledgeable in his field and even brought in experts (guest speakers) to cover any material he wasn't sure about. The class was relatively small, so yes I participated a lot more than I would have at my home institution. I enjoyed the small classroom atmosphere as we were better able to bond with other students and have better discussions. It was also better than any religion courses i've taken at my home institution because of our on hands experience. It was more than just lecture and readings. We actually got to see history before our eyes. |

Comments: | The course itself was difficult. However, I believe learning any new language is always difficult. It required a lot of effort on my part to learn the basics of the language. Even with that all said, the course was amazing. The professor was awesome. He made the experience fun and enjoyable yet he made sure we learned. He took our class to the market to use what we learned in an actual setting. He took us to a cafe to apply what we learned. It was in these moments which I felt I truly learned. Knowing the word and memorizing it is one thing. However, when you take what you learn and actually go out and apply it, its another. It sticks to your memory. Again the small class created a great atmosphere. The professor had the opportunity to get to speak to individual students and help students when they needed. Overall, great course and even better professor. |
