Studying In Rome: Wish I did more Past Review

CEA CAPA Education Abroad: Rome, Italy

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes, I loved study abroad. I've learned so much about myself, I traveled almost every weekend, which was great for me and was my goal. I learned a lot about Italian culture, but it's made me dislike the Italians because the way they treat people. I think it definitely changed my future plans and made me want to travel more.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was fine, there wasn't much to do, it was typical study abroad. I didn't like the fact that I had to attend 2 schools, one being a 40 minute bus ride away. I think that option should be taken out. I feel like a lot of the teachers think that they're amazing teachers and expect the best out of us, yet they're teaching at a study abroad program. It's hypocritical and comical.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Strengths- staff was great and personable, the facilities were fine, possibly larger desks that don't break all of the time. Weaknesses- The location of CEA was far from everything, it made it hard to wander around Rome because we were 40 minutes away from everything. Our program was a tad small, but I liked getting to know everyone. I did expect more enrolled students. I think a reason why more people go towards Florence is because they don't have to attend 2 schools, which is another thing, I don't think that we should have to go to JCU at all.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The apartment was well furnished, but there wasn't a microwave, which could be problematic. And I know another apartment through YPR got a dishwasher. YPR came at reasonable times when we requested them, but would be rude to us often. I didn't like that we lived so far away from everything, mostly nightlife, once again. I also wish all of the CEA students lived near each other, like in the same apartment complex. I think dorm set up would be perfect for this amount of time because everyone would be able to hang out as much as possible.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I enjoy the nights when we all get to relax and go on a pizza & gelato crawl or apertivo night, those are fun. However, I wish that there were more trips to different cities in Italy. I also wish that we didn't have to pre-pay for any of the trips because I wasn't able to go on any and feel like I wasted money.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Rome isn't very safe. At times I don't feel safe at all, I was once harrassed when I was in a group of 5 other girls and we were chased down the streets. I feel like I"m going to be pick-pocketed all of the time

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I lived in a neighborhood with Italian families, so a lot of the time I had to speak w/ waiters or people working in Italian, or attempt to. It was definitely a challenge, but that was the one perk of living in a neighborhood- was practicing my Italian. However, a lot of the time I just spoke a mixture of Italian and English.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • People and how close we all became
  • Faculty helpfulness
  • School facility
* What could be improved?
  • Location
  • Cost
  • Dual-university
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wouldn't recommend it because of location solely. I love the program, but it's just difficult commuting everywhere. Also, Rome is a very hard city to live in, mostly for women. I think a student who wants to be very independent would benefit the most from this program.
