CEA CAPA Education Abroad: Rome, Italy

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely! Besides being indebted to my parents for the next 2 years, I absolutely don't take any of it back! We had a fabulous time and I saw so many things and experienced so many things with friends I will have for a lifetime. It was an unforgetable and life changing experience because I will forever share these fond memories with girls I will always be with!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes were usually on-site and we had a lot of small but frequent projects in class. These projects were a small portion of the grade. Most classes had a large paper, a midterm, and a final consitute the large majority of the final grade. I really enjoyed that though! My classes were all american students studying abroad and the CEA Rome program was relatively small so you got to know your peers really well usually. The workload was less than PC but you are always busy going to different parts of the city for class or to see a different monument/ museum/ go out to eat.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The strengths were that it was a small program and you got to know everyone really well. The weaknesses, I can't think of any really.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Italians eat a TON of carbs, I was looking for more variety. But I knew this going in. It just was a lot.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The Apian bike ride was a lot of fun! great activity I would have never known to do and it was a highlight!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I always felt very safe. Rome is a safe city in general and at no point in time was a nervous or worried for my safety. Even late at night.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Budget, and then double that budget and that's what you will spend abroad.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

We took Italian 4 days a week and I think I definitely learned the basicas. The class was great! Well structured and great teacher! But You are only there 4 months and languages naturally come harder for me, so I was able to take away the basics and that was really it.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Being in Rome
  • It is a smaller program, I was able to be friends with my peers
* What could be improved?
  • Some of the housing fix it issues could have been handled more quickly
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I was originally enrolled in a program in Australia where I would be gong with friends, but not really close friends. I switched to the Rome program because 3 close friends of mine were going there and it was the best decision I could have made because it made my 4 months absolutely AMAZING!!! I highly recommend going with someone you know you will be compatible with and someone you look forward to becoming basically sisters with.
