Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

There wasn't much homework given out and the stuff that was usually wasn't collected unless it was a composition. However the midterms and finals counted as most of the overall grade. Many teachers used powerpoint or some other similar program to teach. Those powerpoints were then posted to the program website for studying purposes. The grading scale as well as the expectations are different as well. Instead of a grading scale from 0 to 100 they have a scale from 0 to 10 but it is not equivalent. The expectatinos are lower, it is acceptable to pass with a 5 or a 6.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The staff was very knowledgeable about the city because most of them were born and raised there. They were very efficient and helpful with any questions I had.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My neighborhood was very safe. I lived in a good location. I lived on Virgen de Lujan which was close to Puente de los Remedios which was close to Plaza de Espana and some shopping was nearby as well as a metro stop and some nightlife. School and a larger shopping center wasn't too far away. I only had to buy some hygiene and luxury items, everything else was provided by my host family. By the end of the program I felt like my host mother was truly my Spanish mother, not just a lady I was living with.

* Food:

My host mother was an excellent cook. She made meals that were typical of Spain but also catered to us. She made meals that she knew we would eat as well. If we didn't like something then she wouldn't make it for us. She provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner and would accomodate to our plans. For tapas I would recommend going out to different places and just trying things that you may not normally eat, you may be surprised at what you like. Definitely go to Dos de Mayo and try the Solomillo al whisky, other places make it but they all taste a bit different.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I emailed my language exchange partner right away, the first 2 never really responded more than a couple times but I kept at it and eventually I found one that was interested in meeting up and talking. I have many great experienced and have met some really great people because of my partner. I would recommend getting out and meeting new people whenever possible and practicing the language.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

We were alerted of areas that weren't safe in our orientation. I didn't have any health issues though where I needed assistance.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? between 50 and 70 Euros a week depending on how often I went out at night or went out for tapas and shopping.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I didn't encounter any unexpected costs

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Intermediate Spanish
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced my Spanish with my host family and my language exchange partner and other people I met. The teachers were also very willing to help me practice as well as the CEA staff. Most people spoke Spanish however there were enough people who spoke English that if I had problems I could find someone to help me.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would recommend this program for students who want to learn or improve the Spanish language and likes to go out and meet new people. Get out and travel to other places but don't forget to travel within Spain as well as in Seville itself. Go out and explore the city during the day and the night. It's beautiful during the day and night and there are many things to see that aren't well known. Get in and meet locals who can tell you good places to go. Get out and enjoy the nightlife.
