Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The academic side of this program was not rigorous. The classes taken during my time abroad were designed to complete a writing minor.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Tamara and Andrew are incredibly helpful. They addressed any problems promptly and really made the logistical side of studying abroad a breeze!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Urbanest is spacious and wonderfully located. The only downside would be paying 8 AUD for one small load of laundry.

* Food:

I stayed in an apartment so I cooked the majority of the time. However, there so much diversity in cuisine throughout Sydney, make sure to branch out!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I interned for Cancer Council NSW, so I had ample opportunity to interact with the locals. Some of my classmates were not as fortunate because our classes were set apart from the our host university.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Our first day, the Sydney administration gave us a walking tour of our neighborhood and showed us to the doctor's office we could use, should we need it.

* Safety:

Just use your street smarts!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

CAPA is wonderful, they work to get you the best internship possible and my home institution structured a great academic program.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I budgeted my money by limiting myself to about $150 - $200 a week, it might not sound like a lot but I was able to by groceries, eat out, and go out on this budget.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150-200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Budget, budget, budget!

The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
