Interning in Australia- Amazing If You Are Looking For Work Experience Abroad Past Review

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes, it was very worthwhile. I needed an internship for my major so it was great for me. I am just disappointed that our classes weren't in a large university there. I feel that I wasn't exposed to a lot of Australian's because all of my time was at work or with my program friends, so it wasn't like we were going to branch out randomly at the park and talk to people. I would have like to be with Australian's in class.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Work load was very light. Most of the work revolved around our internships and our personal feeling about how we were coping with our host country. We tended to have open discussions for every class period, although the business class was a bit more structural. Classes were definitely easier than my home university since tests weren't required and most of the assignments were based on personal opinions.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

This program was great IF you absolutely need/want an internship. Due to the fact we all had internships, we were not enrolled in a regular university in Australia. This, unfortunately, took away from the true experience since we were unable to meet Australians easily. 20 hours of our week was spent in our internship. My placement was great, but others were not as happy with where they were working. It's a risky program to join and just know that you will most likely only be hanging out with your American program friends rather than meeting Aussies.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I selected Host Family, not knowing that I would be living with American students from all over the U.S. if I chose to live in the apartments. My first two weeks were very difficult. The house was small and the neighborhood, although I was told was very safe, was about a mile from the train station which was scary for me to walk to at first. Also, I was a 45 minutes commute by bus if I wanted to get to the apartments where all of my friends were living. This was very upsetting because as we became closer, it took me so long to get to them. The only good part is that I was only a 15 minute walk to school which was very convenient.

* Food:

It's a lot like American food so there is nothing to worry about here. Just be prepared to gain weight! They have little cafes EVERYWHERE filled with yummy food that is not so healthy, so you are always tempted to buy it.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Australian's are the most friendly, laid back people you'll ever meet. I never felt unsafe or frustrated with the people there. All were willing to help when I was lost and they were very polite. The only downfall was that customer service was lacking due to the fact that their minimum wage is much higher than it is here so it was unnecessary for them to cater to all of our needs. This was found to be very annoying at times, but you get used to it.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Very safe! We took the bus and train everywhere and I always felt safe. Even for me who travelled alone a lot and had to take the train by myself very late at night, it was a great experience and very safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Be prepared to spend a lot of money. I'd say you will be spending more like $400-$500 a week, or at least plan for that. When spring break and the weekends roll around, you don't want to feel left out and like you aren't getting the full experience by not traveling so bring enough money!

Comments: This was a bit more challenging because we had two exams and we only met once a week. The lectures could be a bit long and at one point our instructor was out of the country for two weeks and upon her return we had an immediate exam. This was difficult because we hadn't been taught much and I did not feel prepared for the exam.

Comments: It was a great course. We mainly discussed our experiences in Australia and how they differ from America. It was fun to hear about how everyone else was feeling and it made our group become closer together.
