Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My classes pushed me and forced me to both listen and speak Spanish on a regular basis. Beyond this, they also facilitated a good understanding of Spanish culture, literature, and grammar, which have proven useful both in and outside the classroom. The classes were difficult enough, but not too difficult considering our plans for frequent travel. I feel as though I learned a lot this semester and I'm sure I'll frequently reference some of the work I have done here this semester.

On-site administration of your program

It was a bit frustrating sometimes when the study abroad office on Valpo's campus didn't have the answers I needed. I was always directed to Central College to get the information I need. I understand that the program is through Central College, but because Valpo has a study abroad co-op through them I think our office should be able to provide almost all the necessary information, especially because Valpo students don't attend the orientation at Central College. Other than that, everything was taken care of in an efficient manner.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Apartment on C/ Mendez Nuñez across from Plaza Einstein. <br /><br /> My apartment is a 30 minute walk away from the CLM, so I spend quite a bit of time walking everyday especially when I have to go to and from school more than once. It's a nice walk through lots of shopping areas and plazas, so I don't mind. I live with a divorced Spanish woman in her late 30s with her 7 year old daughter. I've absolutely loved my time there. I'm so glad that I decided to live by myself and not with anyone else from my program. It has enabled me to practice my Spanish more frequently and to also become close with my host family.

My host mom cooked traditional Spanish food that was always very flavorful. She is also a very healthy eater like me, so that worked out very well. I also appreciated that she served me normal portions and didn't try to give me heaping plates of food.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I really enjoyed our program trips to Madrid, Morocco, and Cordoba. I also enjoyed the flamenco show and bull fight.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I never had to go to the doctor while I was here, but it seemed like those that did get sick from my program got the medical attention they needed. Granada is a very safe university city. I never felt unsafe. I still wouldn't recommend walking around late at night, however.

I can definitely tell a big difference in my confidence speaking Spanish. I still wish that I could speak a bit faster or smoother, but I can definitely tell a huge difference in how much I am able to understand. I'm sure the speaking will continue to come along even once I'm back taking Spanish classes at my home university. I also feel like I have had a good balance of traditional grammar courses and colloquial Spanish. It's nice to have a mix of both.
