Central College Abroad: Study Abroad in London

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was very worthwhile. I would definetly choose this program again. Since then, I have strong desires to study in other countries as well. I gained an understanding of the cultures of Europe, experience in international business, closer interactions with a variety of races. You learn alot that you dont realize, it will change you indefinetly.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The greatest aspect of this program is the internship/work placement. The program directors have a wide selection of available businesses that ask for students. They work with you to find a position that you are interested in, whether it be your major or just an interest. The internship is M-Th the last six weeks of the program. It is a learning experience in itself in finding your way to work through the underground and train systems.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They did a great job at placing all our group members at relevent internship locations. They also planned several day trips during the week to the theater, parks, or out to eat. Most weekends were free to travel around England or Europe. They provided a multitude of activities happening around the city each week, and were most always available for questions or advice. Very easy-going and fun!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was in a 1 bed room. It has a sink and a wardrobe with hangers inside. There are 2 restrooms and a shower room on each floor. All rooms have a window. They have wireless internet and will set up each computer to the network, you can wireless print downstairs. Its only a 4 story building, so the stairs are not bad, the elevator is small,(normal in most small hotels in Europe). There is a lounge downstairs too with resources to assist in making travel plans, and movies to rent/borrow. The laundry is cheaper for students than other guests with the purchase of tokens at the front desk.

Location is great! Very safe. There was construction right behind the hotel, starting at 7 in the morning, but only bothered a few rooms. There is always hot water, and good pressure. However,one of the students got bedbugs the last week of the program.

* Food:

Its the same basic continental breakfast each morning, but helps. Most times you can sneak a muffin or fruit for a lunch break at work. The food that we bought was similar to the US, not as large a selection, lots of sandwiches or fast food. The prices were similar, exp a pizza - $8-12 or 8-12 pounds, the exchange rate is what makes things more expensive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Get out and about the host city as much as possible. There are sooo many free things to do/see in London. Don't leave England every weekend either. There are other great locations around England that could be made into a day trip. Although this program is in the summer, a beach is a beach, get out and embrace the different cultures

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

H1N1 was going around during my time abroad, however, there are drugstrores (Boots) around the city, as well as a walk-in clinic a block from Vandon House. I didnt have to take any medications while abroad, and always felt safe. Keep you wallet in your front pocket. Don't make a scene, or act stupidly. Always have someone halfway sober to help the GROUP home.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Your ISID card will give you a discount to most tours. Unexpected expenses included train tickets to the airports. Thats the beneficial thing about a budget, you set aside an emergency fund to unanticipated expenses.

Other Program Information

* Where did you live?

 • Dorm

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? To see as much as possible, its good to start early in the morning with a PLAN of Events for the day. I would not spend alot of time at the clubs, (drinks are expensive), plus it makes you tired the next day. Always have a list of things YOU want to do/see, and sometimes its better to go off by yourself for those things instead of waiting for others to go with you.

Credit Transfer Issues: No, not in the least. Central credits transferred easily. I think you need to speak to the dean of your college to be sure the internship credits post would be the only requirement besides requesting the transfer from Central
