Academically rewarding, socially boring. Past Review
By A student (Religion and Studio Art, Middlebury College) - abroad from 09/01/2013 to 12/13/2013 with
Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies - Oxford
I feel like the academics made it worth it, as well as being in the city of Oxford, which is beautiful

Review Your Program
|
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The one on one tutorials were the highlight, as well as having access to some amazing Oxford resources |
|
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
It was OK. I felt that I was a little mislead on the nature of the program, and how much we had to do with Keble College. |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Fine, clean dorms. I didn't realize prior to study abroad it would be completely American students in one building |
| * Food: |
NA, I cooked my own food. |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I felt fairly removed from Oxford University culture, but had a bit to do with the local culture from going out by myself - not necessarily facilitated by the program. |
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
NA, I didn't have any health issues |
| * Safety: |
I felt safe throughout |
| If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
|
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
Oxford was VERY expensive, and paying for my own food really added up. I had around a 100pound budget per week for food and personal expenses, which comes to just under $200 US. Sometimes it covered me, sometimes not, depending on the week and the things I wanted to do. |
| Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | around $180 per week |
| Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Stop drinking alcohol. |

The Academic or LinguistYou went abroad with specific academic goals in mind; the program credentials and rigor of your coursework abroad were very important to you. You had a great time abroad, but never lost sight of your studies and (if applicable) were diligent with your foreign language study. Good for you! |

| Comments: | Very challenging and extremely rewarding. It involved reading primary text from various philosophers and writing papers on them, but I learned huge amounts and felt I left with a extremely solid basis to work on. |
