Fall Semester in Prague Past Review
By A student (Middlebury College) - abroad from 09/09/2019 to 12/16/2019 with
IEF - International Economics and Finance Program (CERGE-EI, Charles University)
It was worthwhile overall. I learned about the challenges of living in a new place and the value of speaking the language.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
They offer very challenging as well as easy classes, just depending on what you take. The professors can be very engaging or boring, it's hit or miss. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Excellent staff and programming. Easy to enroll in classes, great orientation, and interesting day trips and outings. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Our apartment was really nice and the landlord was great to work with. |
* Food: |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
My UPCES classes were mostly Americans and the IES classes were mostly international, so I had to make a big effort to meet Czechs but was pretty successful. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Prague and the region felt extremely safe, I never worried. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
I liked the balance of independence and guidance from the program. I tend to be independent, but found I learned about the region and history through UPCES-sponsored activities. At the same time, I'm sure I could've been just as satisfied in many abroad programs. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
Prague is very cheap, and the program covered public transportation as well as provided fruit, coffee, and snacks. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $100, including the gym membership |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Europeans are generous with student discounts so always ask! You should be able to use public transport to get anywhere, and you don't need to tip over 10%. Everything is pretty cheap. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
I enjoyed my Czech class, but the program didn't otherwise engage us with the Czech language. |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Beginner |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | None |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Unless you have a specific reason to use Czech besides on the program, I would just make the most out of the Czech class and using Czech words around the city as much as possible. |
