Winter -and- Language Wonderland! Past Review

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I love how the locals would try to speak Russian to us instead of English. The whole program -staff and students- encouraged us to use Mandarin for every part of daily communication. The small class sizes give everyone a chance to converse daily, and are often directed to one's specific level of fluency. The study environment is also wonderful- with everyone focused and encouraging through the rigor of our assignments.

On-site administration of your program

All of the program staff were always very considerate and helpful, encouraging us to come and speak with them if we ever had any concerns. They all worked together to spread announcements through all of the classes, giving students ample opportunity to understand and work though any language barrier. We were encouraged to get engaged and take initiative to find ways of solving any problems.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

It was an adventure and a learning experience to set up and pay for internet service by working through our host university's technology office. The heat stayed on through all of March, and all the dorm staff were friendly and helpful- even more so if you prepare what you were going to ask them. Our local roommates were wonderful resources for any outside community help we might need (like bus route directions), and I felt comfortable talking to any of the roommates and students who happened to be around- for conversation, study help, or advice.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program hosted events on the weekend to get us out and about the community despite the frigid winter weather. By the time the weather warmed up I felt confident enough to explore the city with classmates or roommates on our own. I also found yet another regular weekend activity with one of my classmates that gave us even more chance to communicate with various locals.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

One of my classmates' roommates was around to go with me to visit the campus clinic when I needed it. It was inexpensive for a check-up, and they also sold medicine there if that was suggested. Other than that, all was good. Wear plenty of proper warm clothing when needed.

The campus always felt very safe. Be very careful crossing the street- and for those not used to winter- snow is okay to walk on, ice- not so much.
