A Fantastic Study Abroad Experience Past Review

By (Chinese and Political Science, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill) - abroad from 01/02/2009 to 05/15/2009 with

CET Beijing

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My study abroad experience was fantastic. I went with the goal of improving my Chinese and that is what I did. I think that when you choose the language intensive program with CET, make sure that language study is you number one priority. It is not a vacation, though you do have a great time. I would try to build a relationship with your Chinese roommate, other than that of a 3D, upright dictionary or proof reader. Try to establish a relationship with them that is not study related. I learned so much about myself and the extent of my own independence while I was abroad. You learn to rely on yourself and that anything is possible with effort. After CET, I know that Chinese will be an integral part of my life and my career.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The academics were at the same level as university classes. However, because the program I took was specifically language intensive, all the homework was about Chinese. It definitely a challenge to switch gears from six different classes at my University with various types of homework, to strictly language study, but once I transitioned, the work load was fine.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The CET was very accessible. Their on-site office provided a great resource for students if they had problems. Though, their was an instance where they were slow to react. The program was small enough that everyone recognized or was on first name basis with the office members.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

When I went abroad, CET was renovating their dorms, so they rented the space from the Beijing Education Institute. Our rooms were rather apartment like, with new facilities. The area we stayed in was very safe. We were right across from an elementary school. We had a watchmen at our gate 24/7. Also we had card keys to get into the building. I never felt unsafe at night, and usually took walks before I went to bed. We were very close to the buildings where our classes were held. I could get up ten minutes for class and make it to class with time to spare.

* Food:

We had food provided to us for lunches only. This was not that big of an issue, because there was cheap food places surrounding our living place. The lunch that was provided was very good, however, some students complained about the variety as well as options for vegans and vegetarians. I was satisfied with the food situation.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

CET did there best to provide us with social and non-academic aspects. It is just a hard balance to strike with academics. We had weekend trips to various cultural landmarks around Beijing. Furthermore, there was usually a game or a prize incentive to go! We went to the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, the new modern art area etc. My favorite trip was the long weekend we took to Xi'an. We took the train to the city and did a city wide treasury hunt. It was great! And our Chinese roommates got to come with us. Another equally as fun trip was our overnight sleepover at the Great Wall. That Saturday, we hiked, and then that night we slept on the wall. It was great, though freezing. :)

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I got a stomach bug one week in Beijing. My roommates were really helpful by taking me to the local pharmacy that prescribed me medicine. Other than that, no problems.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

My language skills exponentially improved will I was at CET. Because there was a language pledge, there was not a moment we were not studying Chinese. Everyday interactions with fellow students, Chinese roommates and people on the street were just some of the ways you use your Chinese. There were some students who did speak English, but that was an individual decision. Most people chose to honor the pledge.

A Look Back

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Intensive Advanced Chinese

Course Department: CL 411
Instructor: Wang, Jiang & Chen
Instruction Language: Chinese
Comments: This was the core language study at CET. We had grammar and vocabulary class in the morning, taught be Wang Laoshi. She was a fantastic professor, who was willing to vary her teaching styles to fit her student's needs. She was also very approachable. We also had outside practicum homework, which related to the material we studied each week. This required us to go outside the school and talk with tea house owners or tour the hutongs of Beijing. We also had a drill portion of the study. This was one on one work with Chen Laoshi. She would go over the new grammar structure as well as any other questions we had with the new material. She, furthermore, helped us on our individual problems areas and worked with us to resolve them. I participated in class far more on my abroad experience then in my Chinese classes at my home university. This was a result from the hands on teaching style as well as the small teacher to student ration, which required participation.
Credit Transfer Issues: There were no problems transferring credits to UNC-Ch.

Classical Chinese

Course Department: CL 414
Instructor: Jiang
Instruction Language: Chinese
Comments: This was a great class that went over Chinese history as well as analyzed classical Chinese. Jiang Laoshi, was a fantastic professor who was very interactive. We watched movies in class that related to the material. Although, classical Chinese is intimidating, she made the subject matter easier to grasp.
Credit Transfer Issues: No Problems :)

Chinese Literature Elective

Course Department: CL 416
Instructor: Xie

Comments: This course was designed to look at and investigate Chinese literature. We look at poems, plays and novels. Our final project was very open and you could choose to write an analysis of a few of the works or write a creative piece. This class was a integral in my study of Chinese culture. Xie Laoshi, furthermore, was able to teach us difficult material in a an effective way. This was by far, my favorite class.
