Charles Darwin University: Darwin - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
Yes its worthwhile and I learned a lot about other cultures. I also became much more independent than I was at home. However if I had to do it again I would have chosen a more classic Australian city because Darwin has a very different culture.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Charles Darwin University is not perceived as a very prestigious university by Australians. Most of the class information could have been easily researched elsewhere and the grading seemed to be biased towards Australian students in some subjects. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The staff was very accessible and knowledgeable however they were confined by the university system which is slow. Also there were only a few of them but they did great with what they had. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
North Flinders International House on campus.

It was on campus so close to class but slightly removed from the city. Aesthetically not that great but perfectly adequate. The campus is totally open so anyone can get to the dorms though. Bedding, towels, and a small fridge are provided and cookware can be rented cheaply for the semester from the office. There are no dining halls so there are kitchens on every floor. |
* Food: |
Food is quite expensive and there was a smaller selection than at most grocery stores but most items are easily to get. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
The dorm staff arranged camping in the outback, sightseeing tours, crocodile and kangaroo spotting events and many others. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Darwin is generally safe but there was an Australian wide outbreak of violent crimes during my stay. There is no health clinic on campus but there a few within an easy distance. Health care was comparable to the U.S. system. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $50 without dining out, $30 a meal if dining out |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Food at the grocery store is expensive but dining out is much more expensive than at home. Personal items such as shampoo are much more expensive unless there is an Australian brand. |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | Be prepared to do a lot of independent research to be able to write the papers. There are no exams. The experience is worth it though. |

Comments: | The assignments were very vaguely structured and graded harshly with no one receiving good marks. There were guest lecturers for most classes which were not related to the material in the assignments and over all the class was poorly structured. The professor, though nice, was not helpful or understanding of the fact that she was vague in the assignment directions. |
