Hong Kong: An Experience to Remember Past Review

Chinese University of Hong Kong: Hong Kong - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes! I was able to travel and experience a different culture doing the similar everyday life I would be in my home country. I want to travel more and perhaps I might apply to graduate school abroad. I am also considering, after my academics, I might want to live and work abroad.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

There was a lot of work and the grading system can be quite different but nothing too serious to cry over spilled milk. Teaching methods are similar but they may call things and methods differently. For example, a discussion would be call tutorial.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I think they're doing fine. I have nothing to complain about. My expectations were all met.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Had a freshly built dorm. Segregated from local students though. Had to purchase own cookware. Mattress may be considered paper-thin in comparison with mattresses from your home country. Things were still under construction and waiting to be built as we were living there but nothing major.

* Food:

There is a lack of fresh green vegetables and salad. Vegetables are usually cooked.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

High table dinner with your college and professors. Sight-seeing and school sponsored tours of the country.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Vehicles have the right of way. It's not a law to yield to pedestrians. Hong Kong are germiphobes. There are hand sanitizers everywhere. Also, many public toilets may not have toilet paper so make sure you carry some tissue/hankies around.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Make a budget. Food and things there may seem cheap but it all adds up.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
Language acquisition improvement?

Meanings of Life

Course Department: ANTH 2350
Instructor: Professor Gordon Mathews
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Prepare to think outside the box and beyond. There are only two assignments and participation that your grade will depend upon. Those two assignments are the take-home midterm and the take-home final. Participation is about 5 to 10% of your grade. It will make the difference of an + or -. Class is very interesting so attend. I think it will be worth your time.

Computer Aided-Drafting

Course Department: MAEG 2010
Instructor: Professor Kin Chuen Hui
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Professor doesn't care if you come to class or not. All he cares is that you better had learned the material because at least 50% of your grade depends on the final project. Attend tutorials or it'll be very difficult to learn CAD on your own. Hands on experience with AutoCAD and Solid Works. At the end of the course, you say "Wow, I did that on AutoCAD/SolidWorks?!"
