Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Classes are much smaller and more personal. The school loves to use group final projects especially for business students. For almost all my classes we had to present a group final project. The teachers are always available to help and it is noticeable that they want their students to succeed. Grades were based on a curve for business classes. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The IASP program that I enrolled in was somewhat helpful, we could always go into the office and receive help. However I wish the program was more involved with the students creating more activities for us. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Living on the University is very safe, housing arrangements are made online through the University. The University is located on a mountain, literally. So to get to classes you can either hike up the mountain or take the shuttles that come by every 15 minutes. The fastest and cheapest way to get to the nightlife located in central is to take the MTR (subway) and that takes about 40 minutes. After going out the only way to get back is to take a cab, but taxi fares are quite affordable if you have a full cab. Bed sheets were given to all exchange students but cookware was not. We had a community kitchen that included a stove, microwave, and refrigerator. |
* Food: |
Food is the best part of Hong Kong! Food on campus is cheap and they give you a huge portion of rice, however its not the best quality. We usually went to Tai Po Market which is one stop away from the University to eat out. On weekends we go to Mong Kok, Tsim Tsa Tsui, and Causeway Bay to eat. There is delicious food at every stop on the MTR, you just really have to go out and try it! |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
The IASP farewell dinner was very memorable, we got to look back at our journey through a wonderful slideshow and a funny music video made by exchange students. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Overall Hong Kong is pretty safe. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |
|
Language acquisition improvement? |
The best way to improve your language skills is to not be afraid to speak the language. Traveling also really helped especially to mainland China. Most exchange students take a Putonghua class so we all practice with each other and it's really fun! I also practiced with locals, taxi drivers, and friends. All students can speak English on campus, however if you go off campus knowing Cantonese would be very helpful. |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Exchange |
