CIEE: Amman - Summer Arabic Language

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Before my time abroad, I was looking at living a pretty domestic life (USA). Now, I'm planning on attending graduate school in the Middle East; I absolutely cannot wait to return to the region.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I had a wonderful time with the CIEE program in Amman, Jordan. I developed close relationships with the staff and professors, which definitely impacted my experiences abroad, in terms of being comfortable in the CIEE office and classroom, approaching the professor after class, learning about opportunities in Amman and other travel opportunities, etc. The workload was very similar to what I experienced in the States; if you do your work and study, you'll be just fine. Like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it. Being honest about your skill level is crucial, especially when learning a foreign language. I thrived in the small class size and greatly enjoyed my classes.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I absolutely LOVED the CIEE Amman Summer 2011 Staff. They were always accessible, helpful, and willing to go the extra mile to ensure that the students were comfortable, knowledgable about the region (particularly, protests, border crossing information, etc.), and more. They were a well-rounded, top-notch crew.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in the Shemesani neighborhood with other CIEE participants. The neighborhood was safe and we were just a short taxi ride away from the University, First Circle, and other sites. The apartments were wonderful; clean, furnished, and very livable.

* Food:

The food was wonderful! Be prepared to try things you never have before! My personal favorite dish: Malfoof! Ask your host family, or a family friend, to prepare it for you!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I really enjoyed all of the trips organized by CIEE, my favorite being to Wadi Rum. There is no place like it on Earth.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Jordan is a relatively safe Middle Eastern country. Like anywhere abroad, American students should be diligent, respectful, and aware of their surroundings and their environment. Personally, I never was in harm's way, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

More people spoke English than I had anticipated, but there were plenty of opportunities to use Arabic. You could practice at the grocery store, in the taxi cab, in the classroom, with your roommates and the apartment landlords, with other University of Jordan students, and so forth; the list is endless! As mentioned above, you get out of it what you put into it. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there, language-wise, and seek opportunities to use the language. The people of Jordan are always impressed that American students are taking the time to learn Arabic, and are more than happy to assist.

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Don't be afraid to venture outside of your comfort zone and meet local students and families. My fondest memories of my summer in Jordan include the friends and families of Jordanians, Syrians, and other local residents.
