everything Barcelona has offered me from the sites, the food, and the people was memorable Past Review

CIEE: Barcelona - Business & Culture
My study abroad experience was so worthwhile! I had so many doubts and fears in the months prior to my departure to Spain, but I was soon put at ease when I met other students who were going through the same things that I was. I have made the most incredible friends that I hope to keep in touch with when I return to the United States. I have also learned a lot about myself as a person, and have seen my confidence grow as I am able to approach new situations. My proficiency in Spanish has grown since I have been here as has my outlook on Europe. This short time I have had abroad has made me grateful for the experience and I would recommend anyone who has the opportunity to study abroad to do it because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity that you do not get the chance to do again. I am so thankful for everything Barcelona has offered me from the sites, the food, and the people! I hope to come back here one day and relive this amazing experience I have had!

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
In regards to academics, this program was definitely not a joke. The classes I took in Barcelona were definitely on par in difficulty with my regular college classes, if not harder because of the language of instruction. I was prepared to work, but the workload was often very difficult to accomplish and to stay on top of. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The program director here in Barcelona was wonderful. She did everything possible to make the students feel at home and always was available for appointments if you ever needed to talk to her. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
My housing was in the Guinardó-Horta district of Barcelona, and I lived right by the Hospital de Sant Pau. My señora was absolutely the sweetest person and did everything possible to make sure I felt right at home in her apartment. I have enjoyed living here so much I will be really sad to leave!

The neighborhood appeared quite safe at night, but I usually took cabs home when the metro wasn't running because it was never safe enough for a girl to walk home alone at night. To get to school, it was usually only a half hour commute in total between walking to the metro, taking the metro, and then walking to school. I didn't live in the direct center of town, but just outside of it, so getting to and from it was never a big issue. |
* Food: |
My señora was a great cook and definitely made sure I did not leave the table hungry! I ate a lot of healthy Spanish food including a lot of fish that I generally don't eat at home simply because it's not always available. Although I did not eat out a lot, I did go to a tapas bar on Passeig de Gracia once when my sister was in Barcelona visiting called Tapa Tapa and the food there was great! |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I think our Madrid trip was really a highlight for me because I got closer to a lot of people I might otherwise not have as it included all members of our program. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I believe the city was overall safe, except you have to use a lot of caution at night. I never carried a purse with me at night especially when I knew I'd be walking by myself to meet up with people and took a taxi home when possible. I only used the healthcare system once because I was very sick and it was easily accessible to get to the doctor and receive treatment. The quality of care was about equal to what I'd receive back home. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I was not aware that the phones here would be so expensive. I thought if we all bought phones on the same network that we would all be able to make free calls to each other. However, although we all switched our plans to being able to talk for "free" to one another, the calls still cost 0.15 euros to connect. I went through a lot of minutes on my phone just from calling people to meet up because I didn't have internet in my homestay for the first three weeks I was here. The phones were very expensive and there isn't a lot you can do with your provider at home to change the plan internationally. I found that the students who had BlackBerrys were able to communicate the easiest through BBM because it's free between users. |
Language
Language acquisition improvement? |
It definitely helped to have taken some Spanish prior to coming to Spain because the language courses here were very accelerated. If I did not have some proficiency in the language, I would have had a very difficult time trying to communicate with locals for basic things. |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | I would tell prospective students that this program is amazing! You will do so many things you never thought possible, and make so many new friends you won't want to leave when it is time to return home! This is an academically challenging program, so this is not the program for you if you are not prepared to work and study hard. However, I have learned so much about myself and about Spain in my short time here I will be very sad to return home. If you have the opportunity to study abroad, I really think it is worthwhile! |

Comments: | I loved this class! Our teacher made learning Spanish so much fun with videos, debates, games, and a lot of in class discussion. There were many reaction papers to write, but outside of these, the only work we usually were assigned was to study for the two midterms and final exam. The grammar in this class was definitely hard, but the teacher was always available for extra help. |

Comments: | This class had a lot of field trips and the only real work we received were field study journals throughout the semester. Mireria was a great teacher and really showed compassion for her students if they ever needed help. It was fairly easy. |

Comments: | The midterm exam for this class was extremely difficult and we had in class worksheets that were more like a pop quiz each time class met to make sure you had taken notes on the last class's lecture. We also were told a book was needed for the class which we had to go to the copy center ourselves and purchase for about 20 euros which was a complete waste of money because we never used it after the first week of class because no one was doing the readings! A small research paper, a presentation, and a final paper were also all part of the workload for this course. |

Comments: | This class was such a joke to attend all the lectures because all the teacher did the entire time was scroll through a PowerPoint with about 400 slides that he already gave us and talked about subjects unrelated to the exams. This class was very hard to pay attention to because we often did not do much work, and the midterm and final exams were impossible because he looked for minute details in the answers. If you do not have to take this class for credit, do not take it because it is so not worth the time! |

Comments: | The only reason attending this class is important is for attendance purposes. There were only two assignments the entire semester which were two eight page, 1.5 spaced, eleven size font papers that the man took forever to grade. We were told that our final papers would be graded in advance of our going away party and they were never graded on time. Such a waste of time and energy to sit through a two hour lecture where the class is never engaged! |
