By Erica M (Communication and Media Studies., Simmons College) for
CIEE: Lisbon - Language and Culture
It is hard to pinpoint my gain from this program. I learned so much from it: about myself, my heritage, and also my family.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Most of my education came outside the classroom by talking to the Professors and the director. They were valuable resources when it came to learning about Portugal in a general sense (food, traditions, etc.). |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
He was great. Easy to talk to. However, I could tell when he was stressed out, and sometimes that made me uncomfortable asking him for help. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
She was amazing. I absolutely enjoyed the time I spent with my host mother. Always willing to help, always willing to give advice and teach me! |
* Food: |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
So much fun. So much to do. Too little time. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Not really any issues. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Advanced |
Language acquisition improvement? |
It helped my grammar so much. And diving in to the language rather than being able to go back and forth was a big help as well. |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | If you are looking for a true old European experience, this is the place to go. Lisbon, even though a large city, is still a calm and inviting one. It is one of the few places that has managed to resist a complete American life style, and is able to maintain its true culture. |
